Strange events during the P6 sequence as Pletcher-Scatuorchio runner System Ready, one of the strong possibilities, was scratched in the paddock for wearing illegal turn downs as footwear. Fold in the early scratch of Nacho Business, and chaos emerged as a result with Weaver returnee Powhattan County ($15.40) winning and derailing the carryover try. Having 4 other winners on the ticket, I suppose in one way that was a better result than staying alive there and arriving at the nightcap to see 4th choice Karakorum Legend ($15.80) emerge victorious absent from the $192 play. The sequence returned a robust $14,200. The rest of the day was very chalky including the money-losing early P4 ($45 invested, $33 returned). Hope you did well!

Enjoyed good start to first full week of Saratoga season, catching the late P4 for a robust $923 as well as the 2 excellent P3’s within the quad ($225 & $166) on the strength of including Lake George heroine Perfect Shirl ($20.60). Only Roy Lerman’s Essex Ferry escaped notice on the the win end Wednesday, as I have trouble betting the retired attorney’s horses (though he can win races). Hope you did well as the consistant beginning to the Spa session continued. $35k carryover a big part of the Thursday action, but the sequence, and much of the card, feels very treacherous…

Good luck!

Strong start over the first quartet of days at Saratoga ended with the bankroll in very good stead on the strength of a $696 late P4 and big score in the 7th keyed by $25 Best Value 2nd choice Honorable Truth ($243 tri). While I was confident enough to include Honorable Truth in the quad play, I tried to get away with singling runner up Platinum Plus in the P6, and that resulted in getting 5 of 6 ($200 conso for $192 play) on the second carryover in the meet’s opening salvo. As is typical at Saratoga, finding one horse like Honorable Truth or one overlaid multi-horse/multi-race result regularly, is what you need to boost the mutuels in your favor. Sunday, A Smart Judge (27-1) was the right horse to have with 4-5 Cody Samora ($38 exacta), while the $67.75 ($1) Sanford exacta and $150.75 ($1) nightcap triple kept the day’s investments liquid. Saturday, the early P4 ($359) carried the day, while Friday’s opener (Dontstealmyland $48.60; $953 tri) set the tone. The big pools are your friend, and justify your commitment to continuing to fire when things don’t always go your way immediately. It doesn’t take but one well-placed bet to make your day, week or meet at Saratoga…

“Week 2″ starts today, the traditional opening day, and a slippery card is at hand to get it going. Hope you did well Monday and over the first four days!

Busy morning with 9-10a ATR and then Capital OTB-TV 10:30-11:30a, but wanted to be sure everyone enjoyed the weekend. Especially wonderful Sunday with more than 40 Dee Tee partners, family and friends attending Ausable Chasm’s debut. The filly was short and tired to 6th, but had an overall positive through several tough elements including the rail draw and heavy mud flung at her for half mile. She’ll come back August 16 or 22.

Was a nice day from a wagering standpoint Sunday as well with a few good opinions and plays coming through including the $123.50 exacta in the Sanford. I have to apologize for transcribing the 2nd race selections into the P4 incorrectly though, as that botched the modest $90.50 payoff. Third race longshot try A Smart Judge gave a great effort at an overlaid 27-1 as well, though you had to settle for the exacta with the 4-5 Morrison comebacker Cody Samora. Hope you did well! Carryover today of $48k…

The skies cleared for day two of Saratoga, and while the temperature soared, the prices fell to earth markedly with but winners of 5-1, 6-1 and 9-1 the exceptions. The racing was good for this awkward early Saturday on the meet calendar, with a P6 carryover adding intrigue. The Coaching Club American Oaks seems to have found a home and purpose with its’ new placement, and went to Todd Pletcher and the Greathouse’s increasingly impressive Devil May Care. This filly may be far better than anyone knows, and should only gain wider laurels and renown when moving to the 10f Alabama in 4 weeks where Blind Luck will need help from the rest of the cast to win.

Winners were plentiful, but the one I needed most, Asmussen 2yo MSW stunner Wine Police, was left off the sextet ducat costing the $7k return, and the $83.50 consolation didn’t exactly assuage. The hit on the early P4 was OK at $359, but the Asmussen steamer stymied the late P4 as well as the P6. Overall, a very solid day. Hope you did well!

Sunday at Saratoga marks several milestones for our Dee Tee Stables group, as when we send our first 2yo to the post in the 2nd race. Ausable Chasm materialized as the anticipated NY bred so many partners were anxious to campaign, and is an old-fashioned Empire product being by Hook and Ladder out of the Comet Shine mare Ausable. Picked out as a sale weanling by our partner Joe Volpe, she has developed ‘on time’ while doing everything right from the time Ocala-based Ken Lejeune started on her last fall. Gary Sciacca and his team have built her further into a bruising looking juvy miss that passes physically as a sophomore. She drew the undesirable rail post for today, and faces a daunting foe as well in John Kimmel’s Risk a Chance who has been garnering ‘freak’ chatter for weeks on end.
More important than the race outcome later this afternoon is the fulfillment of dreams of those that have longed to make it to a place like Saratoga as the owner of a racehorse. As we collectively learned from our experience with Sumwonlovesyou in 2007, being in the paddock at Saratoga, or being able to watch from an OTB with friends and family as a partner, is a moment that helps make the travails of work and life more worthwhile. I want to thank Joe and Ann Volpe, Ken Lejeune, Gary Sciacca, Chuck Simon and every member of Derby Trail and Dee Tee (whether in on Ausable Chasm or not), for making another opportunity like today possible. Together we’re all making a difference in racing’s present and future by actively committing our time, resources and passion as stakeholders. I hope you enjoy today and that your commitment is amply rewarded with a lasting memory.
