Attempt to remake famed standard into a Whitney prep didn’t draw the field it desired with 23 of the 29 nominations opting elsewhere or failing to be ready. Morning Line and Rule are in MTH’s Salvator Mile for example, while Friend or Foe, Rodman, I Want Revenge, Rail Trip and other Whitney expectant types are in their stalls waiting another month. Frustrating for players, fans, racetrack managements. Despite the limited options however, the event is hardly an open and shut case in any direction among the half dozen..

Cashing some nice tickets along the way helped, but I thought Thursday’s action from Hollywood under the backdrop of what became an enormous single day carryover pool was great fun. Wagerers across North America poured an incredible $999,783 into the existing $112k pot, proving that a little time to prepare and a competitive set of races gets all of us motivated for action. The racing was very good on top of the basis for the interest, and Thursday’s roundtable chat on ATR pointed you in all the right direction’s on the toughest winners, including Rich Eng warning us on the potential for Brian Koriner’s 15-1 upsetter in the 5th, Forward Commitment ($32.20). Brad Free couldn’t have been more helpful either, with the 8 for 28 jockey-trainer stat from Formulator that tabbed Jorge Alcala, Joel Rosario and Santabarbrabendita ($10.40). And in the nightcap, my concern that the obvious players were vulnerable proved out, as Best Value 3rd tab Quintons Destiny from Dan Hendricks took over late and won easily at a fat 13-1 ($28.00).

The other three winners in the sequence were the obvious Luckarack ($6.40), American Lady ($2.60) and Mutually Benefit ($4.80), and having all 6 was good for a robust $30,675. My own ticket was too narrow snaring 4 of 6, but the $74 tri and $401 super in the 4th race with Portfolio, Zees Chris and Dynahere lining up behind Santabarbrabendita covered all of the day’s multi-race investments and more. And in the nightcap, I again utilized the overlay reverse tri key method with W/PL saver approach on Quintons Destiny to another positive benefit when he overachieved at 5 ticks above his 8-1 morning line. The win returned an additional $370 ($28-W/$9-PL) to the coffers and made the afternoon successful. Hope you did well Thursday on a card I’d like to think you were acutely prepared for having listened to ATR!

Certain kinds of races can be your friend — 7f events for me — and others your mortal enemy. I struggle with non-stake extended distance events like Wednesday’s 10f-T 7th, and ended up confused enough to leave out one of the horses that I liked initially, and it cost us the over-paying quad. Despite as sluggish a pace as you’ll ever see from ALW horses, 11-2 Point of Entry could not hold off 3-1 Sky Blazer at the end of the mile and a quarter jog. The other three winners in the skein were easy enough to feature, and despite paying $8.50, $8.60 and $9.20 with $7.90 Sky Blazer, the payoff was terrific for the 4 winners: $510.50 ($1), about 3x the parlay. There’s another chance to work out the kinks at 10f on grass Thursday as part of the $112k P6 carryover sequence at Hollywood, and I think I have a good idea in it. But I find these kind of events befuddling when the players lack the form stakes runners typically have when traveling 11f-13f. Hope you did OK Wednesday… Hope you did OK Wednesday… Brad Free and Rich Eng join me in Hour 3 on ATR to dissect the Holly Park sextet!

Can’t say I didn’t enjoy the day of racing Saturday, but I did come away frustrated, falling short with two value horses I eagerly anticipated: Midnight Billy and Victory Pete. Midnight Billy had been a victim of circumstances and wide trips of late, and drew inside for the Belmont 8th Saturday. Midnight Billy was the anticipated and delicious 11-1, and capable bug Irad Ortiz Jr. did everything right to finish a rallying second to Bishop of Nola. What prevented the Juan Ortiz trainee from winning was the lack of any pace challenge to the front end victor. Alltiffedoff (Castro) nor Gold Raptor (J. Velazquez), both needing to be up front for their own success, seriously confronted Castellano and Bishop of Nola who was able to set :49.0 and 1:13.2 splits. Despite the pedestrian numbers, Midnight Billy closed from last to get by everyone but the Bruce Brown gelding, quashing everything I had in mind and in hand. Bleech. The good news is that there is a $68k carryover at Belmont today, and one for nearly $100k at Churchill for those who focused their attention at Louisville.

Later at Prairie Meadows, the reverse tri key angle salvaged something when Best Value top choice Victory Pete (8-1) was overhauled by Headache (9-2) and Awesome Gem (2-1) in the late stages of the Cornhusker to produce a $117.40 ($1) triple tote. But frankly, it wasn’t what I was hoping for from Victory Pete in terms of result or price. I expected a much bigger tab on the Alexis Barba Cali invader (15-1 ML), though perhaps Bob Baffert’s IA Derby win with HOL last out Prayer for Relief 30 minutes earlier generated extra interest in Victory Pete. The bottom line was that Saturday turned into a bit of a leaky vessel, and we’ll turn to Sunday to make the weekend a success with Belmont and the Queen’s Plate card at Woodbine. Hope you did OK and can muster another day of action!

Much more difficult race than it looks at first glance with three ‘first time turf’ candidates and a FTS in Winloc’s John Lee that is a full to solid ALW mare Winloc’s Glory Days (16/2-4-4, $117k on lawn). Albertrani’s Cool Operator is one of the 2nd timers and will be heavily included, but note that this colt would be the initial ‘first turf’ winner for sire Suave who has only 2 sod successes of any kind in 39 starts from 25 horses (5% W’s; 26% ITM). Always enjoyable start to the Canadian Triple Crown and one of the world’s most famous races, this edition feels like Check Your Soul’s race to lose. Couldn’t have been more impressive in the Trial, and trainer Attfield likely stands alone at day’s end with an outlandish 9th Plate win. Respect the Woodbine Oaks winner Inglorious and will use her in the exotics, but key to wagers may be other Carroll-Donver runner Seawatch at 20-1..
