Flirted briefly with opportunities in another Santa Anita carryover Sunday after Friday’s agonizing adventure, but $32 Preamble dusted any hopes of the conso. However, the nightcap proved invaluable as a handicapping lesson and bailout chance, with an overlaid winner in Tequila Blues (6-1 ML) coming through at 11-1. In this $20k Maiden Claimer going five-eigths, there looked to be 4 low-priced options that were running Beyers in the 60’s in recent races at the level, and none really had any great appeal. But the Craig Lewis trainee (Tequila Blues) was a fresh face that had been working very well for his return from 8 months away, including a pair of recent 6f spins. He had shown good speed in 2 of his 3 three starts before the time off, and the fact that Pat Valenzuela was tabbed for the comeback let you know what approach Lewis wanted to take from the standpoint of strategy.

I made Tequila Blue the ‘Best Value’ second choice at the 6-1 ML number, but when the public ignored him and he floated to $10.80 by post time, he became an even more enticing win bet and exotics key opportunity. Sure enough, PVal rode Tequila Blues from the outset, chasing and corraling early leader Warrens Extrabonus after a quarter, taking command with an eighth to run, and holding off the late runners. I had made a very typical play for me in this situation: $20 win ($20), $2 exacta backwheel with the 4 other principals I identified ($8), and a $1 tri key with the same 4 ($12). A total of $40 wagered. The win mutuel was $23.60 ($236.00) and the tri was $161.70 for just under $400 returned. So despite missing the P4 and P6 conso, the day and weekend ended well having brought back everything invested in the day’s biggest punts.

On ATR, we’ve been promising to talk more about bankroll application, and while I am not the ideal candidate to offer this kind of tutorial, here’s a quick review of how I approached this particular opportunity, and how my thinking goes when betting a well-priced horse I’ve identified as an overlay. You want to make sure that if the horse you like wins at what you consider a square price, you adequately reward yourself, so 50% of the total investment goes toward the win. If your prime play horse runs well enough but falls short, the exacta backwheel (20% of total wagered) with the more obvious candidates invariably covers your plays, and regularly provides a decent profit.

The trifecta key (30% in this case) is something of a ‘fence-swinging’ luxury play. The $12 (1x4x3) invested in the triple brought back $161.70 in this race, but note that the same $12 would have returned $141.60 as an additional 6 win hits (6 x $23.60 = $141.60). The difference between the choices, and why the play ‘swings for the fences’, is that the $12 in win bets has a fixed maximum return versus the tri key which has the potential to bring back whatever the maximum might be in the blind pool with the horses you use. In this case, the horses used were the top four choices at $1.70, $2.80, $3.30 and $9.50. Nisus ($3.30) and The Full Lavino (post time favorite at $1.70) ran second and third behind Tequila Blues for the $161.70 payoff. But had $9.50 Guadalupe Lupe replaced the favorite in the triple, that $161.70 would likey double ($350 or so) and possibly triple or more ($500). If the $9.50-1 runner manages to run second behind the $10.80-1 winner, suddenly that tri careens into 4 figures.

Hope you did well Sunday. I intend to have Steve Davidowitz offers his insights on this interesting example when he joins me on ATR today at 2pm ET. Aqueduct late P4 is quirky and challenging today. Note some very good racing around the country today including the route ALW at PRX — with Chuck Simon/Bob Gary Racing’s Prospect Knight — (PRX 8th-3:22pm ET), sprint ALW at Laurel (8th-3:53pm ET), turf sprint ALW at GP (8th-4:25pm ET) and ALW Double at HAW (5th/6th starting at 4:26 ET)…

Utterly disgusted having written and lost extensive recap of Saturday’s action. Here’s the Cliff Notes version…
  • Uncle Mo’s performance was far from great no matter how fast he came home or well he galloped out, and what he gets out of this artificial event is dubious..
  • The Tampa Bay Derby while fun for those that caught the crazy mutuels, was a complete embarressment for any serious-minded wannabes, and returns the race for now to its’ modest roots as a largely forgettable outpost on the Derby Trail…
  • Premier Pegasus certainly got a dream set up, but Alonso Quinonez and the colt took advantage brilliantly in their first try around two turns. The Myung Kwon Cho homebred was the saving grace on an otherwise bad day for the sophomore crop…

Good day overall at the windows Saturday with $274 Oaklawn P4 covering the other quad tries, and a gaggle of triple hits producing a positive bankroll boost. Hope you did well! $135k Santa Anita carryover the focus today…

Was inexcusably sloppy putting Friday plays together before 12p showtime, costing every chance to cash significantly in the highly bettable Santa Anita carryover sequence. P6 paid supremely nice $100k to three winners, and the review of the skein that Rick Hammerle and I undertook on ATR pointed you in the right direction in every leg. For my tickey, omission of Puype — twice — was the difference between something good, something special and the nothing received. Firster Shezabigbroad was bet like she couldn’t lose in the 5th, and then ran like it, and though I used her in the P4 going three wide, I went just 2 deep on the sextet and felt foolish watching her romp home at even money. Perennial hanger Stoneside came through as advertised on the stretchout in the 6th, and El Martillo was indeed the right other horse with Uh Oh Bango in the feature. But the nightcap cost the conso ($600+) and the P4 as one of the very possible winners, Puype’s Line One, hit us like a sucker punch. Did catch a couple P3’s and broke even on the FG P4 earlier in the afternoon, but the day felt like a gigantic opportunity missed. Hope you did OK. There’s countless spots this Saturday to make a pile! Should be a very good raceday…

Another fun card at Santa Anita, which as Rick Hammerle has noted in recent weeks, has found its’ stride in the second half of the stand. Looks once again like Always a Princess will try to parlay pace and form edge into third straight stake score. Even money Switch has proven versatile though, and her sprinter’s gear will come in handy if Rosario wants to engage Garcia early. And in a case of musical pilots, note that Bejarano acquires the square priced Vision in Gold, who rallied and wired winning her last pair. Fun day Thursday at Aqueduct just missing a square $6k carryover payoff going 5/6. Difference maker was tab of the wrong single when weighing the 5th and 6th races going 3×1 when 1×3 was the golden path. $87 conso and $228 P4 pay carried the big multi-race plays, and some solid P3’s inside the skein made it a good afternoon.

Lloydobler literally and figuratively chased a Haystack Needle in the nightcap, as he continues to battle for his diploma. He was third all the way around the inner tube from the challenging rail slot, and will come back in a few weeks and try again. Hope everyone did well Thursday! Carryover at Santa Anita of $81k, as well as a pair of good sequences at GP and FG. (Unfortunately, NoLa is again off the turf.)

In and out day Wednesday with some isolated success, but no multi-race scores as $20-$40 horses stymied $200 worth of P4 tries. At Aqueduct, a $945 quad was available thanks to $42 Citifiesta who upset the 4th and helped trip today’s $23k carryover. Gulfstream’s sequence was upended immediately by the ‘other’ first time starter in the race, Peter Pugh’s Persian Lime, who popped early and never looked back at 9-1. The P4 there returned $550+.

Finally though, it was trying the action at Laurel that proved to be worthwhile even though the P4 was elusive. Miss Fleetfoot surprised the 8th paying $23.40, and with $17 Baileys Beach before her and $15 Grinnell after, the $1 Pick 4 paid $37,717 (!) from an unexpected $203,194 pool (likely 4 winners). Grinnell was my Best Value top tab in the nightcap, and helped defray some of the day’s expenses when he went suprisingly under-bet. An earlier tri key of Hi Ho Bambino in the top two slots snared a solid $182 triple as well, so playing Maryland was absolutely a positive experience, and I encourage everybody to peruse their cards.

I ended up down a few bobs overall, but hope you did OK Wednesday… thought it was a fun afternoon. Carryover at the Big A Thursday that in a perfect world ends with Dee Tee’s Lloydobler garnering a diploma in the 9th!
