Solid looking group..

Most Likely: #5 Big Buzz 7-2: Full to Big Score moving forward.. 2nd
Best Value: #9 Rockaway 10-1: Botched start in stakes try; Retains Roman.. 9th
Next Best: #8 Pitching 5-1: Proctor/DVD/Glen Hill o/o Indy Groove.. 6th
Exotics Use: #13 Pal High 4-1: Half to Dunkirk by Smart Strike draws in for 2nd start.. 4th
Super Add: #1 Choo Choo 6-1: Dorf tabs Prat for EngChan first turf.. 3rd

5th: 6th Zenyatta (G1), F&M-3+, 8.5f (P3, DD)

Disappointed by absence of Stellar Wind and Vale Dori, but upon further inspection, this is a better race than thought at first glance. Top 3 finishers from Tranquility Lake (ShenQueen (SCR’D), Faithfully, Motown Lady) reassemble with added intrigue of Paradise Woods who looks ready to get back to her good race on favorite strip..

Most Likely: #1 Faithfully 2-1 2nd
Next Best: #4 Paradise Woods 6-5 WON ($3.00)
Exotics Use: #3 Motown Lady 5-1 3rd

6th: OC/N1X, 3yo, 9f-T (P6, P3, DD)

$51k C/O starts here..

Most Likely: #9 Ritzy A.P. 9-2 3rd
Best Value: #6 Troublewithatee 8-1 WON ($22.20)
Next Best: #8 Kencumin 7-2 2nd
Exotics Use: #3 Golden Doughnut 12-1 6th

7th: 6th Chandellier (G1), 2yo-F, 8.5f (P3, DD)

1-2-4-5 from DMR Deb and Alluring Star make this a terrific two turn coming out party. $850k Alluring Star & $650k Moonshine Memories have the brilliance factor, Piedi Bianchi & Just a Smidge look like they fit the race flow well, but will have to show that they aren’t just closing sprinters. Team Desormeaux’s Dancing Belle is the value player (10-1) with the rail for her off the pace run. Fun group..

Best Value: #2 Alluring Star 4-1 2nd
Next Best: #3 Moonshine Memories 2-1 WON ($6.00)
Exotics Use: #7 Piedi Bianchi 5-2 3rd
Super Add: #8 Just a Smidge 7-2 5th

8th: 6th FrontRunner (G1), 2yo, 8.5f (P4, P3, DD)

Top pair from downstate Futurity (Bolt d’Oro & Zatter) have edge here, but sense Bolt d’Oro regression eligible off heady performance. Interesting player is Texas Wedge from Miller who was eye-catching in debut at start of DMR and has been given 10 weeks to prepare for this. Solomani looks to be a two turn horse and Encumbered returns to dirt after nice mile juants (MDN/STK) on DMR lawn..

Most Likely: #1 Zatter 5-2 5th
Best Value: #6 Texas Wedge 6-1 9th
Next Best: #4 Bolt d’Oro 2-1 WON ($3.60)
Exotics Use: #8 Solomani 4-1 2nd

9th: 6th Rodeo Drive (G1), 10f-T (P3, DD)

Goodyearforroses looms tough, especially with Avenge likely to have at least some company on the front end..

Most Likely: #10 Agoodyearforroses 5-2 8th
Next Best: #5 Avenge 3-1 WON ($6.00)
Best Value: #3 Responsibleforlove 6-1 3rd
Exotics Use: #8 Decked Out 5-1 5th

.10 SUPER: 5-10 with 3-5-8-9-10 with 3-5-8-9-10 with 3-5-8-9-10 (2x4x3x2 = 48 x .10 = $4.80)

10th: 6th Awesome Again (G1), 3+, 9f (DD)

Like the Zenyatta, this is a better race than you might expect. Blinkered Donworth and Mubtaahij have potential to add zip to pace established by Midnight Storm and Curlin Rules and pressing presence of Breaking Lucky and Cupid. Win the Space was a terrific 24-1 2nd/layoff 2nd to Melatonin in ’16 Gold Cup and may have a placement in the mix. And note Papaprodromeou stole Eddie D. last night at 22-1..

Most Likely: #6 Mubtaahij 4-1 WON ($8.20)
Next Best: #8 Cupid 2-1 4th
Best Value: #1 Win the Space 15-1 3rd
Exotics Use: #5 Breaking Lucky 5-1 5th

11th: 6th Unzip Me, F&M-3+, 6.5f-T (Hi-5)

This has the makings of a war. Speaking of which, interested in 2 nicely-priced first turf daughters of The Factor (War Front) in Noted and Quoted (6-1) and Queen Laila (8-1). #14-AE Tillie’s Lily (5-1) could be an impact player if drawing in..

Most Likely: #6 Noted and Quoted 6-1 7th
Best Value: #4 Tapped 10-1 2nd
Next Best: #12 Queen Laila 8-1 9th
Exotics Use: #5 Storm the Hill 10-1 WON ($16.80)

PHILADELPHIA PARK

POST-SCRATCHES

8th: PA Derby Champion Connect, 3+, 8.5f (P4, P3, DD)

Not an easy read with 5 players within length or two of each other on paper. Adding Just Call Kenny to the quartet below to try and assure clean break to sequence..

Best Value: #2 Donegal Moon 4-1 5th
Next Best: #4 Matt King Coal 3-1 3rd

Super Add: #8 Page McKenney 6-1 WON ($15.20)

10th: 41st Cotillion (G1), 3yo-F, 8.5f (P3, DD)

As with his colt in the Derby, Baffert has opportunity to secure 3yo Championship laurels with Abel Tasman in this edition of the Cotillion. While price unappealing, reality is that she has shown versatility and tenaciousness throughout her campaign and wins with her ‘A’ race..

Most Likely: #9 Abel Tasman 8-5 2nd
Next Best: #10 Salty 5-1 6th
Exotics Use: #5 It Tiz Well 4-1 WON ($12.60)
Super Add: #3 Actress 5-1 7th

11th: 41st Pennsylvania Derby (G1), 3yo, 9f (P3, DD)

West Coast, Irap and Irish War Cry have opportunity to forge division leadership with win, but feels like West Coast is the right profile horse for this event given its’ leanings towards late developers. Owns tactical style which will help cause given slightly uncertain pace scenario. Rooting for Irish War Cry to get breakthrough G1 win and hints from form cycle and solo drill say he fires today. Oversize Irap arrived early to Bensalem to prepare for this, a positive given surface not every horse takes to. Talk Logistics poised to move forward and can put a charge into your exotics..

Most Likely: #4 West Coast 8-5 WON ($3.80)

WO 12th (6:34pm ET): Woodbine Mile (G1), 3+, 1m-T (DD)

Superb group for this with International invaders peppering the pot. Both Casse’s have my vote as World Approval (7-2) may turn out to be best at this trip like brother Miesque’s Approval and Conquest Panthera (12-1) tractable at various distances and perfect in 2 tries over this lawn. Deauville (5-2) beaten less than 2 by Ribchester & Mutakayyef in Queen Anne going the mile and always fired in North American visits. Pace may be faster than projected on paper and classy veteran Mondialiste (8-1) will make a run as he did winning this 2 years ago. Second to Tepin last year, Tower of Texas (12-1) had traffic issues in last and rarely misses a check on his home turf..

Most Likely: #1 World Approval 7-2 WON ($6.70)

9/4: Saratoga (Season Finale; Hopeful, Baruch)

Monday, September 4th, 2017

Summer ’17, which ended weather-wise weeks ago, comes to a racing calendar conclusion today and there’s no denying that it’s been terrific. A perfect Labor Day is on tap with the Hopeful and Baruch here and the Futurity and DMR Juvy Filly Turf at Oceanside. In addition to the usual intrigue, Saratoga finale is being enhanced by a fascinating duel for the Training Title between Todd Pletcher and Chad Brown. Pletcher leads by one going in to the day and I’ve made it easy to keep track of the battle by featuring their runners throughout the day.

As always, has been a pleasure bringing as much of the Saratoga action and atmosphere to you here and on ATR and hope everyone did well overall, or at least in spots. Was great to see so many old friends over the past 2 months as well as meet new ones. Thanks for the interest and support.. On to fall and the drive to Breeder’s Cup!

SARATOGA

POST-SCRATCHES

7TH & 8TH ON TURF; ALL OTHERS OFF

1st: MSW, 2yo, 6f (P5, P3, DD)

Pletcher unveils $1MM Marzo (Md’O out of SW Spring party) here for Coolmore & Stonestreet, but has been working downstate so we can’t enjoy clocker insights. Though dam a half to Emcee, has bit of a turfy feel and there are several interesting others involved including the other Medaglia d’Oro, Godolphin’s Enticed, who is out of It’s Tricky (’11 CCA Oaks). Fold in Chloe Bradley’s Indiana-bred, Midlantic mystery invader Mind Bottling (Overanalyze a 24% debut sire), Zayats’ homebred Egyptian Prince (Pioneerof the Nile), Englehart’s sharp-working Dirty (Maclean’s Music) and McPeek turf/dirt turnback Pete Marwick and you have a difficult, quirky start to the final program of the summer. Watch board for betting clues..

$72k P6 C/O starts here..

Deep, competitive group of high 80’s/low 90’s Beyering and brutal way to start the P6. Returning Gift Box just one of many capable here, but is off a 10 month break and likely to be overbet. Speedy Still Krz would be a wire threat if not for the presence of Loooch’s May B, literally a quarter horse (some Los Al tries) that was refused Woodward entry. Alex the Terror, at a silly 20-1, could tuck in behind the pacesetters to make first run and Sciacca a nifty 20% (6 for 30) with a $5.58 ROI first off the claim over the last 24 months. Singing Bullet (10-1) had a difficult assignment from the rail in the Amsterdam, but moves outside and worked sharply for this spot. Sound the Horns (12-1) owns CLM/N3L win over the strip at the trip, retains JOrtiz and should get an advantageous journey. Tremendous race..

Most Likely: #8 Sound the Horns 12-1 9th
Next Best: #1 Still Krz 3-1 7th
Best Value: #2 Alex the Terror 20-1 3rd
Exotics Use: #9 Singing Bullet 10-1 6th

Another eye-crossing scullbuster with countless contenders, several of which have run well here already this summer. Decisions need to be made regarding pace (might be more than meets the eye) and those that get back to the grass (Malibu Stacy, Jc’s Shooting Star, Spanish Harlem, Smile Big). Chad Brown may offer a safe haven for bargain-hunting multi-race tickets with Create a Dream a ‘first time 3yo’ and Thais ‘first time North America’..

Best Value: #4 Create a Dream 9-2 4th
Next Best: #6 Thais 7-2 2nd

Super Add: #1 Truth in the Lies 6-1 8th

9th: 110th Saranac (G3), 3yo, 9f-T (P4, P3, DD)

Terrific cast with familiar turfing sophomores like Bricks and Mortar, Yoshida & Master Plan meeting up with new faces like Day-Phillips Canadian visitor Mr Havercamp, 3x Spa stand winner Voodoo Song and emergent Jerkens-Centennial player Rocketry. Would think by now jocks aware that Voodoo Song can’t be left to own devices and with Mo Maverick SCR’D and first turf Caviar Czar right outside him, some pressure should be exerted. Expect a patented inside-out Bravo ride on Mr Havercamp, establishing forward position behind those leaders while saving ground until the stretch. Bricks and Mortar and Rocketry, (possibly Yoshida), will be the late-movers that provide for wire drama. Yet another tremendous and compelling cast..

Best Value: #9 Rocketry 6-1 4th
Next Best: #4 Bricks and Mortar 8-5 3rd
Exotics Use: #2 Yoshida 5-2 2nd
