They knew that Holmes was gone after next season anyway. He was going to be out four games and with all of the trouble with him and Ben, he was the perfect "example". The Jets were in the right place at the right time and willing to take the plunge. The jets really have nothing to lose. Contract is up and if he doesnt perform they can simply cut him. Where is the risk?
The Rooneys are plenty wealthy but that doesnt really matter because there is a salary cap in football.

How many of those players were better after leaving? Because Holmes career has shown himself to be simply pretty good and that is with a better QB throwing him the ball.

The risk is that they are depending on a guy that is one step away from playing no games next year. You cant just pick up starting quality NFL receivers on the fly. I agree that in the short term he may be worth the risk. But it is a stretch to say the acquisition of Santonio holmes make the Jets offseason a huge success.

Of course I am biased but I am not worried that Cromartie or Holmes or the 2 washed up guys are going to make much of an impact. What I am worried about is the continuation of the jets mysterious spell over opposing kickers. That is a far greater weapon than any of the new guys.
