Fun day of Holiday racing Monday despite the Oaklawn cancellation, but was tripped up on both chalky quads at LRL and SA. Missed Chris Grove’s Sweet Goodbye in the 5 horse photo Fritchie anchor leg and Noblety on the downhill course P4 opener at Arcadia. Hope you did OK and are having better luck closing out strings than me. The highlight of Monday certainly was Sidney’s Candy impressive performance in the San Vicente, as the 3yo re-booted his aspirations for his sophomore campaign. John Sadler joined me Tuesday on ATR and was clearly pleased with the way in which the Candy Ride colt drew off under his own initiative with Joe Talamo virtually motionless on the the Craig homebred. And as DRF’s Brad Free hypothesized last Friday on ATR, the Santa Anita main track surface was playing much more fairly over the past week, and allowed capable frontrunners to wire fields if they were best. Sidney’s Candy’s effort bodes well for his ultimate move to the dirt which Sadler still has to plan with Domonation and Dave in Dixie from his barn in the Derby Trail mix as well.

Week kicks off with a very challenging sequence at Gulfstream Wednesday with a highly anticipated soph ALW feature that includes Barbaro full Lentenor making another grass start before a likely main track bid in the Florida Derby. GP 7th, 8th & 9th on ATR today!

The Santa Anita double carryover pool swelled to $2,378,000 Sunday, and the very difficult sextet was more than worthwhile to 5 winners who pulled down $313,721 each for negotiating the sequence. It was a murderously hard series of races to attack, with the G2 Santa Maria H. feature highlighting the day and producing the biggest price of the afternoon, the $28.60 Striking Dancer from Ken McPeek. The deep and treacherous event indeed had the anticipated solid pace I looked for, and the top three — Striking Dancer, ‘Super Add’ Gripsholm Castle and on top ‘Best Value’ Floating Heart — were 6th, 5th and 7th after three-quarters. Pace setters Unrivaled Bell, Miss Silver Brook and Freedom Star were overhauled in the final 500 yards, and finished 4th, 9th and 5th respectively.

A race earlier, Jeff Mullins got his hands back on Leedstheway, whom he had for the gelding early career, and that one aced his first trip down the hill under Tyler Baze to the tune of $21.40. The late P4 came back an enormous $9,281 book-ended by ‘Super Add’ Sky Mami ($14.40) in the 7th, and ‘First off the claim for Melody Conlon’ (30%) Champion Ride ($6.80), ‘Most Likely’ in the 10th. Huge multi-race prices dominated the late part of the day, but I cannot seem to string the right names and numbers together… Hope you did OK.

For the holiday today, Laurel has an all-stakes P4 featuring the G2 Gen. George and Barbara Fritchie, Santa Anita the G2 San Vincente and Buena Vista, Oaklawn the G3 Southwest, and there are carryovers available at Gulfstream ($19k), Beulah ($17k) and Golden Gate ($16k). The Fritchie and Southwest LIVE on “At the Races” today, as well as happy recaps with winning connections from the weekend so far!

Couldn’t catch any meaningful multi wagers Saturday as even chalky Magna 5 play was felled in the anchor leg when the Santa Anita downhill course raised its’ ugly head and produced $20 Dinnr With Nikki C. The sequence paid as small a return as I ever remember: $534.

Santa Anita, which now has a two day C/O topping $500,000, turned tough Saturday when Jeranimo upset Misremembered in the delayed Strub, and Cal-bred Caracortado stunned the heralded Sadler, Harty and Baffert entrants in the Bob Lewis. Even Blind Luck needed to summon all her class to get up past Evening Jewel in the Las Virgenes, which would have been the biggest shocker of the day.

Elsewhere, normalcy reigned for the most part as Rule dominated over-matched foes in the Sam Davis, coasting wire to wire and earning a solid 98 Beyer in the process. The result had to hearten Team WinStar, as the try by their American Lion at Arcadia was uninspiring. It was another good Saturday for Todd Pletcher though as the win by Rule was bookended across state when Munnings aced the GP Sprint Championship while Beyering 103.

And speaking of winning stakes on two coasts, Kays and Jays (Hurricane Bertie) and St. Trinians (Santa Maria H.) gave Mike Mitchell a pair of graded stakes 24 hours after a caller pointed out his dearth of GSW’s on ATR. Mitchell had come into the day 1 for 33 in stakes with numbers on them over the last 18 months. Mitchell has a serious mare on his hands in St. Trinians, who has now won 4 straight in the U.S., and is expected to face off against Zenyatta next in the G1 Santa Margarita March 13.

Have to dig in the heels and go after the Santa Anita carry today… With $500k+ to start it, you can expect the pool to surge towards $3,000,000. The sequence is highlighted by a full and terrific field in G2 La Canada, the 4yo filly only contest that compliments yesterday’s Strub Series finale. Hope you did well yesterday and continue to enjoy the Holiday Weekend. Big Monday “ATR” tomorrow with the Barbara Fritchie and Southwest Stakes live and recaps of the weekend with the principals!

The Eastern snow and Western rain appears to finally have relented long enough to let horseplayers and fans enjoy a major Saturday, and Holiday Weekend, of winter racing. Santa Anita ends up with 4 graded stakes today, including the Bob Lewis, Las Virgenes, Strub and Santa Maria, with carryovers in the P6 and Super High 5 adding to the action. The La Canada Sunday, Buena Vista and San Vincente Monday, make the Great Race Place the focus for these three days.

At Tampa Bay, the Sam Davis sets up next month’s Derby, while Gulfstream has a challenging late P4 that features two excellent graded dashes: The Hurricane Bertie and GP Sprint Championship. The Sprint stake is the middle leg of the first Magna 5 of the season after the first two weeks were quashed by the elements. It’s a fun sequence with quirky stops at Laurel and Golden Gate, as well as a down-the-hill at Arcadia as the anchor leg. Blind Luck in the Las Virgenes (Leg B) appears the universal sequence single.

Hope it’s a great afternoon for you… Enjoy the day!

Brutal effort by single try Shabaab at 2-5 in the Gulfstream 7th Wednesday to quash the quad punt. In fact, the Pino-trained Shadwell runner barely contended before fading from a stalking slot at the eighth pole. The fave’s failure boosted the P4 to $435 for the .50 variety, with even money Fawkes feature winner, a pair of 5-1’s and overlaid Brassie Prince ($20.60) making up the sequence. Brassie Prince was a Best Value second choice and was the best find of the afternoon. Hope you did OK…

Thursday has a remarkably difficult P4 skein at Gulfstream followed by 2 excellent MSW’s at Santa Anita (4th, 6th) which are part of a $77,800 P6 carryover. Gulfstream races 7-9 and SA 4-6 on ATR tonight live! If all of us can negotiate the 4 events at Hallandale, we should get paid. It’s a crazy set of races with what should be some excellent betting opportunities. The SA P6 is made tougher by the 2 maiden races, the always tough downhill turf event that starts the sequence, and a cheap group in the nightcap… Enjoy!
