Weather finally cooperates with great racing in offing

The Eastern snow and Western rain appears to finally have relented long enough to let horseplayers and fans enjoy a major Saturday, and Holiday Weekend, of winter racing. Santa Anita ends up with 4 graded stakes today, including the Bob Lewis, Las Virgenes, Strub and Santa Maria, with carryovers in the P6 and Super High 5 adding to the action. The La Canada Sunday, Buena Vista and San Vincente Monday, make the Great Race Place the focus for these three days.
At Tampa Bay, the Sam Davis sets up next month’s Derby, while Gulfstream has a challenging late P4 that features two excellent graded dashes: The Hurricane Bertie and GP Sprint Championship. The Sprint stake is the middle leg of the first Magna 5 of the season after the first two weeks were quashed by the elements. It’s a fun sequence with quirky stops at Laurel and Golden Gate, as well as a down-the-hill at Arcadia as the anchor leg. Blind Luck in the Las Virgenes (Leg B) appears the universal sequence single.
