the hype was built by ESPN. you certainly can't fault the Eagles for picking up some extremely good free agents/trades.

Agree 100%. Eagles are trying to down play the hype. They definitely improved on paper, but that means nothing. You never want to be the team everybody is talking about in Preseason they never seem to meet expectations.
