The versatile Turkoman should be added to the list.

Not sure any on the list can exactly be called great--a subjective word--though some seemed destined for greatness, particularly Hoist The Flag .

Nice to see Inchcape remembered--ran three times only , won one stake , broke down twice, but was so impressive that he was thought to be the next Man O' War--a year his junior ...

I would add Hilsdale, Dark Mirage, Hill Gail, Mongo, TV Lark, Silver Spoon , Cicada, Princess Rooney, Alsab and Billy Kelly to a group of forgotten goods or greats for a start ...

Arts and Letters another ...

"Not sure any on the list can exactly be called great--a subjective word--though some seemed destined for greatness," this makes so much sense to me. I should have titled my article horses who seemed destind for greatness.

I would love to have more names of horses who seemed destined for greatness.

I don't know if landaluce would count?
would she?

A good choice --she was brilliant ...

Blue Peter , an excellent War Admiral juvenile that died before his three year old season might be another .

Graustark another vastly promising incomplete .

I would say Barbaro --though some deem him great already ...

And Tim Tam, b. 1955--surely a TC winner until he fractured a sesamoid in the stretch.

T.V. Lark is not forgotten! My first favorite--conqueror of Kelso on turf--lives on (if barely) through Bertrando and Quack (damsire of Misremembered, so there's hope).

Maybe not by you thankfully, but his name rarely comes up .

He was formidable on the lawn and if I remember correctly, Longden rode him ...

Graustark is a good one. I think he came undefeated into the Bluegrass with a ton of hype, but lost that race and suffered a career-ending injury. He had a classic pedigree too (by Ribot) and could have been any kind.

And even I wouldn't call T.V. Lark "great," but he was pretty good. His daughter Pink Pigeon was a real flyer on the turf as well.

I earlier made that distinction fromn the original list, but TV Lark was a bit better than pretty good, IMO .

I liked PP a lot ...

Whenever you ask about "forgotten" horses, everyone says "Sham." By definition, he's not forgotten.
Bold 'n Determined won the Oaks (the CCA version), the Spinster, the Santa Susana (now Santa Anita Oaks), Kentucky Oaks, and Fantasy S, and she beat Genuine Risk the only time the pair met, in the Maskette S (G2) at Belmont. But Genuine Risk had all the glamor of being a Kentucky Derby winner, even though she had won only two G1 races all year, while Bold 'n Determined had won five G1s.

Yes, I know.. also won the Ftn of Youth, Florida Derby, KY Cup Classic, Swaps.

He was a good and consistent horse.. I've just never associated him with the word "great".

To me Bold N Determined is the most overlooked horse of my (race following) lifetime, which dates to Secretariat. She was probably better than Genuine Risk and yet no one seems to know who she was. She lost the Mother Goose by a nose to Sugar and Spice (Alydar's sister) and but for that nose would have been the only filly to win the KY Oaks and the old NY filly Triple Crown.

While I'm at it, I've read about this race a bunch of times, but this is the first time I've found it. Devil's Bag - Champagne

What constitutes greatness now with abbreviated careers? Thunder Gulch won a G1 at 2, and had 7 wins in 10 starts as a 3yo, including 4 G1 races. How many horses have ever won 2 of the 3 Triple Crown races, then added the Travers? His last race was a defeat at the hands of Cigar. In most any other year, TG would have been Horse of the Year, but 1995 was a once in a generation year for Cigar.

In his stud career, he produced a HOY, Point Given.

i dont think horses had abbreviated careers in 1995 like they do now. not to nitpick, but the remsen is a grade 2, he didnt win a grade 1 as a 2 year old.

he did have a very good 3 year old year though. he was a very good horse. but i dont think he did enough to say he was great. i think greatness should be reserved for horses who show high quality for at least 2 seasons
