If you're consistent with your thought and think deeply about the US not WI supreme court the country is screwed for the same reasons you just pointed out. I however have faith in the US and the good will overcome the bad and common sense not Al Gore like fantasies will prevail. Question is how long will we sink before we start bailing out the ship?

If you were consistent with the political philosophies you demagogue, you could never vote Republican again.

Alas, so it goes.

Overcrowded prisons - suicides, illness, filth - human rights violations - Obamacare healthcare vouchers are evil.

Sure, that makes sense.

3 meals a day, fresh water, heat and medical but no that's not good enough, poor guys are sleeping in a gym. Release them on society, I'm sure they've all learned their lesson.

How about cancelling the check to Egypt and let's build more prisons if needed. You know worry about protecting law abiding, U.S. citizens, 60% of whom even pay income tax, rather than egyptians?

Why wasn't Charles Manson's sentence commuted back to the original death penalty when California reinstated that punishment?

We can start to empty those prisons that way...

Well, no, actually the problems were stopped up toilets with the fecal-urine water running on the floor, rats, cockroaches, bedbugs, etc.

But don't bother to learn anything about the situation before you use it to diss Obama for something totally unrelated

Statistics show 50% of the released prisoners will be back. Should we be building more prisons or sending checks to egypt and pakistan among the list? Is our economy still in trouble or are we celebrating its end by showering gifts on the world? Want to know how many crimes are done statistically before an offender is caught? Multiply that by 20K are we're talking a real crime wave coming up. Only consolation is it's California.

Maybe we should be unclogging the toilets and killing the rats and cockroaches. You might consider the reason this made it all the way to the high court.

Was that a reference to the criminal population and the death penalty?

How about stop locking up drug users and save the country billions?

Check your math on that.

When there are more overdoses, plane crashes from drugged out pilots, malpractice from drugged out surgeons, more useless druggies getting welfare instead of working, do you really think we'll "save" money?

So your position is that threat of imprisonment is an effective deterrent to drug abuse.

Interesting.

No.

But it could be a reference to the anti-freedom abortion control freaks that want to dictate how other people have to live their lives.

Drug users or those convicted of minor drug offenses are rarely sentenced to prison unless it is a violation of probation or a charge picked up while incarcerated. In IL the average time served for murder is less than 15 years.

I know the State of CA has a three strike policy so releasing those in for minor shoplifting and drug charges I have no problem with.

Here's some info from the Fed on the subject

There is a myth in this country that U.S. prisons are filled with drug users. This assertion is simply not true. Actually, only 5 percent of inmates in federal prison on drug charges are incarcerated for drug possession. In our state prisons, it’s somewhat higher—about 27% of drug offenders. In New York, which has received criticism from some because of its tough Rockefeller drug laws, it is estimated that 97% of drug felons sentenced to prison were charged with sale or intent to sell, not simply possession. In fact, first time drug offenders, even sellers, typically do not go to prison.

this country and the people are really screwed up when they make drug users out to be criminals. I understand punishing the dealers, but addiction is a physical and mental health problem, not a crime.

5% and 27% turn out to be a high number of people Dellinger!

plus its not hard to get charged with intent to sell even if that is not your intent.

Cops just want your money, they arent trying to help people. (not all cops of course)

That's 5% and 27% of prisoners incarcerated on drug charges not of the prison population as a whole. Since 20%* of the prison population is in for drug related crimes those numbers are actually 1% and 5.4%. Considering a good deal of possession with intent cases get plead down to simple possession those numbers are even less.

The Supreme Court ordered california to reduce its population by 23% so some real bad guys are definately going to be released. The Supreme Court has ruled the rights of criminals trump the safety of society. Specifically the poor of society as most of the released will return to poor neighborhoods.

Looked up State of CA prison records for new admissions in 2010. Only 0.2% or 119 men and 5 women were admitted for marijuana possession and 729 total went in for possession with intent to sell. 58,743 total were admitted.

No. The Supreme Court ruled that even the incarcerated have the right not to be kept in inhumane, overcrowded conditions living in fecal and urinary waste, rats, cockroaches, excrement, and violence that can't be controlled, leading to a markedly increased suicide rate compared to other prisons.

Every one of these people could be kept incarcerated, if California had fixed the problem of the terrible conditions. Why aren't you going after that? Why aren't you blaming the California prison system for screwing up so badly that the SC rules prison population must be decreased? That is the cause of it all.

marijuana possession is the least of the drug problems / arrests. Pot possession is in the state's best interest, fine the crap out of the person (leaving them in great financial stress), and let them survive on their own when jobs dont want to hire them.

If somebody gets caught with crack cocaine do you not think they are getting a sentence? If someone has one vicoden that is not prescribed to them in FL, it is a felony. Felony for every pill. I think it is immoral to treat someone who has a drug addiction as a criminal. and a huge waste of money to treat said individual as a criminal.

Yeah, I think a majority of that 5% and 27% do not belong there.
