I think this wasn't your run of the mill slow paced turf race (which typically results in a wire job). While the QTR was very slow, the rest of the splits weren't. The result was that the mid pack horses (chasers/stalkers) were all run off their feet (after the initial split) and the race collapsed in the stretch.

I think Bejarano blew this race. He could've maintained the same advantage going slower (especially the 3rd split) as there was no real threat from the horses closest to him - the threat was from the closers- and had a little bit left for the finish.

Note the splits in the chart.
