I'm trying to understand how someone collecting an entitlement would side with the party that wants to eliminate entitlements. I can't wrap my arms around that.

I don't believe that the GOP want to eliminate entitlements. I think this mostly cannon fodder for the press. Also, I dont think SSDI is an entitlement per se.
