Terrific racing on both coasts Wednesday as Belmont kicks off Jockey Club Gold Cup Week and the Oak Tree at Santa Anita-Breeders’ Cup Meet opens. Middle double of late Elmont P4 is particularly salty with deep filly and mare ALW in the 7th leading up to outstanding overnight stake 8th which could easily be a Gr. III.

At Arcadia, the 6th features a serious cast of 2yo boys going a mile on the lawn, and many in the lineup are connected to well known siblings: #1 Quietly Waiting (Kid Grindstone); #7 Erbeia (Olmodavar); #8 Recap (After Market, Courageous Cat); #10 Saintly Seoul (Rush Bay); #13-AE Take a Hard Look (Dynamist). The Gr. III Morvich has its’ last 2 winners (Get Funky, California Flag) and the defending BC Turf Sprint hero (Desert Code).

Hope you did well Sunday where I made a nice run at the Belmont carryover and hit some nice bingos including $19 Solvent. Should be a fun day, and it’s going to be a super week with the major action moving to a new level this weekend.

Belmont, Calder focus on far flung Saturday

Got skunked at Belmont in P4/P6 tries with odd set of circumstances producing low-priced winners that were curiously tough to string together on tickets. Honestly don’t know what I would have done differently, and luckily, the $2,600 (P6) and $180 (P4) weren’t the kind of returns that get you suicidal. Hope you did OK. Fun and eclectic racing around the country today with Belmont’s card particularly intriguing for wagering purposes. Calder .50 Big 4 looks like good action too. Regionally, Laurel hosts Jim McKay Maryland Million Day, Turfway features the Kentucky Cup, and Remington has their Oklahoma Classics card tonight. Plenty of other good racing scattered about too, with Presque Isle winding down (3 stakes), Woodbine (Selene/Ontario Derby) and Hastings (British Columbia Oaks/Derby) hosting nice Weekends.

Cires in the 7th, (16-1 and tough to include prominently), and Lookin at Her, (18-1 and nearly impossible), blew up the P4 to the tune of $12,280 and triggered a $28,000 carryover into Friday’s fun card. Though I wasn’t close, Cires appeared on one back-up ticket to start the skien, which demonstrates how the multi-ticket approach at least gives you a chance during a crazy sequence like Thursday’s.

If you or I had liked Cires a bit more, (I had him as a “C” include), he could easily have appeared on more tickets. Couple that with any inkling that Lookin at Her was worth using, and you can see how playing more than one AxBxCxD ticket, (which would be hard-pressed to have both winners on any moderately priced ducat), can play out for a big payday.

Today we’ll get a chance to employ the TicketMaker method on a P6. Hope you did OK yesterday…

Interesting outcome on the P4 Wednesday, with the old fashioned AxBxCxD play hitting for $425 while the multiple play TicketMaker suggestions missed the skien. That was more due to my tinkering with rankings of the horses after the scratches than any faulty methodology of the multi-ticket approach. The lesson is still viable even in the loss, as on many days I might have decided to leave 4th leg/3rd choice Nostalgia off the 4x3x2x3 ticket in favor of 3rd leg/3rd choice Richland Creek. Had I made that move, the ticket would have been a 4x3x3x2 play and would have missed.

The TicketMaker multi-ticket approach would have that combination much more often than not… And although I miscued with it Wednesday, I still will be working with it to try and improve the P4/P6 approaches. We should collectively benefit from the method long term as it gets better coverage and makes better use of investment dollars than ‘caveman’ tickets. Hope you did well yesterday and will bear with me on the experimentation!

Another good sequence to attack Thursday at Belmont. “At the Races” will be live 4-5pm only today before turning things over to the “Down the Stretch” team and their coverage of the Little Brown Jug from the Delaware (OH) County Fair Grounds!

Rolled Saturday’s modest $268 P4 score into fun day of Belmont action Sunday that ended with $500 quad and bonus of $200 late P3. You Go West Girl ($12.00) and nightcap single Exhi ($10.40) were a big help in the late multi-race action, but getting 4-1 Legally Blanca to best even money Strike the Bell in the 8th was instrumental to the healthy payoffs. Hope you did well!

The carryover P6 paid nearly $76,000, and though 4 of 6 was an OK try, this was a very approachable jackpot on the kind of budget a lot of us employ. As discussed on ATR Monday, I felt like I had the right understanding of the sequence overall, and needed to use 4 in what was a confusing opening leg for me. And sure enough, 7-1 Wishingonadream, who I had further down my list, took the 5th. While the P3/P4 to end the day more than offset all the afternoon’s investments, missing this P6 had a big lost opportunity feel to it. The lesson? Again? DRF Formulator TicketMaker… Stretches the budget and broadens the coverage. Example of the TicketMaker approach is used below on today’s P4. It may not be for everyone at first glance, but if you take time to learn its’ nuances, it will pay off for you.

DRF TicketMaker: http://www.drf.com/formulator/ticketmaker.html

Belmont to start the week with an interesting late sequence. And note too that the 6 horse stake in the 3rd is a terrific race to watch today which includes Pyro’s little sister War Echo, and more nice 3yo fillies going a mile.
