Holiday Wknd action kicks off with $32k BEL C/O

Saturday, May 26th, 2012

Caught late P4 and conso’d in chalky P6 Thursday at Belmont, but we won’t have to worry about too many short prices Saturday. $32k P6 and $350k guaranteed P4 sequences are nothing short of impossible with an average of 11 horses in each race including an intriguing edition of the Sheepshead Bay. I could use 4-6 horses in each event in the P4/P6 sequences and not feel overly confident about hitting anything! But let’s give it a try as a great 3 day weekend of racing kicks off!

7th: CLM/N2L, F&M-3+, 8.5f-T (P4, P3, DD)

Late P4 starts with another maniacal heat that has far too many possibilities to cover on any reasonable multi-race play with class droppers galore, layoff returnees and several with less than obvious turf form. Dee Tee’s own Ausable Chasm involved here and a check of any kind would be a pleasant surprise as she tries stretching out on the lawn for the first time from the widest berth of 12..

Best Value: #2 Silent Joy 12-1 2nd
Next Best: #9 Royal Sighting 6-1 WON ($16.20)
Exotics Use: #10 Truly Devoted 7-2 5th
Super Add: #5 Lillehammer 8-1 12th

8th: Sheepshead Bay (G2), F&M-3+, 11f-IT (P3, DD)

Assume going in that the turf will have plenty of give to it and 2nd time North America Juddmonte mare Principal Role should benefit from it. Motion has said Aruna will come out if the course is too soft..

Next Best: #7 Distorted Legacy 6-1 5th
Exotics Use: #5 Aruna 3-1 WON ($6.10)
Most Likely: #4 Hit It Rich 7-2 2nd

9th: NY-ALW/N1X, 3+, 8.5f-T (DD)

Off turf surprises lead to $28k Belmont C/O

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

Week flying by after a Preakness that has had all viewers — dedicated or casual — abuzz. Nothing sets the game and even general sporting observers into a frenzy like a Triple Crown bid. I’ll Have Another appears better suited to the challenge than many of those that have fallen short in recent years with a pedigree and style that work for the 12f ‘Test of the Champion’. Other pluses as we arc towards Elmont include the remarkably unflappable Mario Gutierrez and the ‘dig deep’ victory in the Preakness, historically a more positive harbinger of Belmont success than an open length romp.

Going back to the weekend, after a bad Friday, Preakness action proved excellent for the bankroll with DWL’s $19 Skyring anchoring big returns within the Murphy itself and through multi-race punts involving the race. Hope everyone enjoyed the coverage and did well. Off the turf action Wednesday at Belmont provided surprising fireworks that resulted in a $28k carryover into Thursday’s good card. Only the 9th race has come off the turf. 3rd, 6th, 7th remain on…

POST-SCRATCHES

4th: NY-OC/N1X, 3+, 1m (P6, P3, DD)

$28k C/O starts here..

Super Add: #4 Mary P. Jones 15-1 4th

6th: MSW, 2yo, 6f-IT (P4, P3, DD)

Start of P4 and major key to the C/O as 2yo’s turf sprint. Interesting firsters #5 Jump for Kitten (By Kitten’s Joy and full to solid Kid Canuck) and #8 Leader Avenue (out of excellent MSW Dyna Da Wyna) meld with KEE baby race exiters (#4 Brazilian Court SCR, #6 Almost an Angel, #7 Joha) and one or other of Breen-Hall Bernstein colts (FTS #1 Bye Bye Bernie or 2nd timer #1 Bern Identity SCR). Not sure how you exclude any from serious tickets..

Exotics Use: #7 Joha 5-2 WON ($5.80)

7th: OC/N2X, F&M-3+, 7f-T (P3, DD)

This is a good, tough race, but as opposed to the difficult 6th where a clear winner is murky, if Revenue runs back to her performance turf dashing at Gulfstream, she’s best here..

Do we come to Belmont with Triple Crown on line?

Saturday, May 19th, 2012

Belmont P6 almost went un-hit again but ultimately rewarded 2 players for $430k each. Pimlico action was alternately chalky and surprising with the turf affairs producing $40 and $50 winners that were very hard to reach. Graded events were highlighted by Pletcher exacta in the Susie and outstanding Special that saw superb performances from the trifecta of Alternation, Nehro and Endorsement. Marathon day post-ATR Friday didn’t end until well past 1a this morning after interminable trip to Baltimore and am late getting this out. Friday’s ATR featured extensive analysis of the stakes portion of today’s Preakness card. Here’s a rundown of the tabs..

As discussed for 2 weeks, Derby players are the principals here. Bodemeister has every advantage and opportunity to win this while I’ll Have Another appears to be poised for another premium effort. Creative Cause has proven himself tough and dependable while fans of late field addition Daddy Nose Best may be rewarded here with at least an exotics boost. Of the fresh faces, Tiger Walk should finally save ground and Zetterholm is good now..

40-1 winner bankrolls $320k BEL C/O & PIM action

Friday, May 18th, 2012

Made a few good moves Thursday at Belmont including decision to focus on smaller multi-race punts and tread lightly on treacherous looking 2 day carryover which ended up featuring $80 and $100 winners. Couldn’t find 50-1 Irish Lion in the starter handicap 8th, but did OK tabbing 40-1 wire threat Beppj (pronounced bep-ee, not bep-jay) as the on top ‘Best Value’. Indeed, Sciacca’s Beppj held on under a strong ride by Mike Luzzi who gave the quickish sister of routing turfers Mr. Hooker and Sister Berta a breather through the middle portion of the race before scooting home. In addition to the generous $83 mutuel, Beppj closed out a healthy $422 P4.

When Irish Lion won the 8th, a third carryover seemed assured, but in fact Ned Allard’s She Is a Lioness was somehow covered in the nightcap for the whole $320,000. Favored Margaret Lilian came through in the finale with Desert Bliss, my other longish notion for the day, a closing but distant 2nd at 13-1. So as a result, there will be a jackpot of 1/3 of a million drawing attention away from the Pimlico card Friday and I would think you can expect a rare NY sextet pool of more than $1,000,000.

Hope you did well Thursday and are armed for the C/O try and/or the Pimlico slate which itself boasts a $114k P5 satch.

BEL C/O action off turf but still playable

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

Was stymied in the Belmont finale Wednesday looking for a P6 conso and solid P4 anchor when The Dood sprung the 20-1 upset with wiring returnee Why Broadway. Shivmangel’s Whywhywhy winner — brilliantly tweeted pre-race as a viable horse to try by Andy Serling — helped seal a second carryover into Thursday worth $114k. Though the nightcap beat tweaked, returns on the day were still excellent including $230 (4th-6th) and $190 (5th-7th) P3’s and quality exotics in the 4th and 5th. After an extended period of leaking money, I was happy to have a consistently positive day. Hope everyone did well. Thursday card is a bit less attractive than yesterday’s, but hard not to try the bonus pool after the serious flirtation. Meanwhile, Pimlico’s Friday card is outstanding and you should be looking forward to it as a great prequel to Saturday’s action.

#3 Tawaared another being dropped back from whence he came, but nothing seems amiss given that he’s been working steadily along since the high level try at Gulfstream. After that, start reaching for prices because Raging Wit (8-1), Moose Man (12-1), The Vin Man (15-1) and Wayward Willie (20-1) are all as viable around the money as ML 2nd/3rd choices Xodo SCR’D (3-1) and Becky’s Kitten (7-2)..

Very slippery end to the sequences. In an utterly non-descript field, #2 Desert Bliss (12-1) may be sneaking in here under the radar as first time as a 3yo — frequently a scenario that produces new best. 2-1 fave #4 Margaret Lilian tries the turf cutback and looks like highly dubious..

Best Value: #2 Desert Bliss 12-1 2nd
Next Best: #9 Sweet Penny 7-2 4th
Exotics Use: #8 Our Pink Ribbon 6-1 7th
Super Add: #4 Margaret Lilian 2-1 WON ($6.30)
