Blind Luck leaves no doubt; Wet, sloppy day at Spa

All around poor afternoon with little production upon which to positively reflect. The racing highlight of the Spa day was certainly the feature, which turned into a showcase for the undeniable 3yo filly division leader Blind Luck, ultra-professional moving to the lead late against a slow pace and winning by a long neck over Tony Dutrow’s Havre de Grace. Wagering disappointments aside, the lowlight of the day was the bafflingly empty performance authored by Todd Pletcher and John Velazquez with favorite Devil May Care. The Pletcher filly underwent the same race dynamic restrictions that Quality Road did in the Whitney, ‘rated to death’ through fractions of :49.2, 1:14.4 and 1:39.1. And just as Quality Road had no excelerating punch on which to rely in the late stages, Devil May Care was absent of any of the kick she had displayed annexing the the CCA Oaks, Mother Goose and Bonnie Miss.

The win by Blind Luck, who now has three G1 wins on the year (Alabama, KY Oaks, Las Virgennes), distinctively places her atop the soph gal standings. In dismissing Devil May Care, Blind Luck also helped create a clear runner up in the Eclipse competition as her closest persuer is now Evening Jewel who won the G1 Del Mar Oaks later in the afternoon. Jim Cassidy’s lovely Cal-bred was beaten two noses by Blind luck in the KY Oaks and Las Virgennes, but owns 2 G1 wins of her own (DMR Oaks, Ashland), as well as scores in the San Clemente and Honeymoon (G2’s). It will be interesting to see what decisions Cassidy makes with Evening Jewel between now and into the Cup.

Heavy rain overnight and this morning in Upstate NY, and a wet main track is assured today. The feature and ALL 4 other races originally scheduled for grass (5, 8, 9 and 10) are OFF THE TURF…
