agree, horse never would have lost with a better rider that day. Glad you agree it was not the horse.

Tom Durkin: Erudite influences behind a celebrated voice

Quote:
A picture might be worth a thousand words, but if those words are coming from Tom Durkin, they command a far higher price.

Soporific. Obstreperous. Oracular. The kind of words that used to be called $10 words, SAT words, the kind of words that might get you a bemused look if you use them in conversation.

But when they come from the mouth of Tom Durkin, during an extemporaneous race call for which one can prepare only so much, the result is admiration, not confusion.

Denman used to be great, but now his overplayed catchphrases are really annoying. If you listen to South African racecallers, some have very similar styles. What set Denman aside previously was that he had become more original and had his own style. Now, it seems like he relies more on annoying sayings rather than ability. If I hear "they would need to sprout wings to get to ______ today"...

But again, as others have mentioned, we all have our own opinion on what is good and bad, or what we like or don't like. I do agree that the Belmont in '04 is a much better example of how to call a champion getting beat. However, for me this is the standard for how to impartially call a national hero losing while keeping the race caller etiquette. Unlike Blame/Zenyatta, this was interjected with excitement and spine-tingling.

I tend to agree !

UOTE=Benny;992955]How about, "they'd need to sprout wings ? " Hand me the barf bag. Then he stole a line from Johnston at CD , "the more they asked, the more she gave"

Who waits to mute Denman, who names every horse entering the gate. The man is on permanent mute. His catch phrases are redundant. Oh, and his job as shill for the Pick 6 bet $$$ totals and potential carryovers, guestimating how much the carryover will be too.
The only reason the sound is left on is to get a bet down before the start, then mute. Meh.[/quote]

Oh! That is my favorite race call of all time!!! Huge fan of both so I was ecstatic when Bullish Luck won.

The stable mates are together again at Living Legends and hey... if anyone goes to hk pleeeease get me one of these...

(Let this be a warning.. if you bring up the glory days of HK I will NOT shut up)!

Sorry. Carry on!

I think you both need your heads examined if you think Mike Smith lost that race.

Please. Durkin had to call the '90 Distaff--talk about having to deal with emotion. Get some perspective. It is no tragedy to lose a race.

When the horse you are shilling loses, just deal with it like a pro. His "Baaah-layyy-mmmmm!" call is a never ending source of amusement with me and my friends whenever it comes up. Pathetic.

Well, you were right in that we both need our heads examined. No question there.

This was tweeted by Mark Hennig of Tom Durkin on the Match Game in 1979. It is kind of funny what word trips up Durkin at the end.

Many years back, I met Tom Durkin and said two words : Speedy Gonzales.

His response was classic. Tom said, "Everyone knows the right answer is Pancho Gonzales".

We both laughed and everyone else was dumb-founded.
