Sheikh Mohammed Re-Purchases Lammtarra
Date Posted: August 1, 2006
Last Updated: August 3, 2006

Sheikh Mohammed has bought back Japanese stallion Lammtarra from Arrow Stud, but there are no plans yet to stand him under the banner of Sheikh Mohammed's Darley operation, according to the Racing Post.
An English and French champion, Lammtarra raced for Sheikh Mohammed's nephew, Saeed Maktoum al Maktoum, whose father, Sheikh Maktoum, bred Lammtarra in the name of his Gainsborough Farm.

As a 3-year-old in 1995, Lammtarra achieved a remarkable triple by winning the Vodafone Epsom Derby (Eng-I), King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (Eng-I), and the Trusthouse Forte Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I). He was only the second horse--the first was Mill Reef in 1971--to win those three races in one year. Lammtarra's victory in the Epsom Derby proved extra special in that he was the first Derby winner produced from the winner of two Epsom classics. His sire, Nijinsky II, had won the Epsom Derby, and his dam, Snow Bride (by Blushing Groom), was awarded the Gold Seal Epsom Oaks (Eng-I) following the disqualification of Aliysa.

Lammtarra stood his first season at Sheikh Mohammed's Dalham Hall Stud near Newmarket, England, then was sold to a group of Japanese breeders for $30 million following that 1996 breeding season. He has sired six stakes winners and seven stakes-placed runners.

----------his '06 fee was 'private'. maybe the sheik will donate him to ky horse park.

Lammtarra's best runner was probably Melikah. she, like her sire, was lightly raced (4 runs in total, all at 3). She won her maiden, and was pitched in at the deep end, 2nd start in a classic (like her sire). Ridden in the Oaks by Chris McCarron, she came third. Sent off fav for the Irish Oaks, she came 2nd behind runaway winner Pertrushka. she rounded off her career with a 4th place in the G1 Prix Vermeille. She is also a half sister to the top class Galileo ..
