Seems these horses - old mares, at the end of their breeding lives - were dumped at this sale, with registration papers.

Not the way I'd handle it, if they were my mares. If a mare gives me foal after foal, she gets to live out her retirement life in my pasture, with good care. Not dumped for $500 as a last profit.
