Asmussen mares rescued from slaughter

http://www.paulickreport.com/news/ra...ghter-auction/

Still can't figure out why they were bred back to Intimidator first.

Danzig 07-11-2012 01:03 PM

bad enough when a small time owner does something like that, but to know that a family presumably doing well would resort to such an auction....well, it's just a damn shame.

LARHAGE 07-11-2012 02:17 PM

I just don't get it, why breed these mares back, and My God, the torture they endure in Mexico, they knife them in the back, and butcher them half alive. I haven't heard anything the Asmussens are saying, so will wait to hear their side, but this is so disconcerting, I know to some horses are just a commodity, but man, have some compassion, I know horses are exspensive, I have them too, but my income is like a pimple on the ass of an elephant compared to theirs, and my horse's have always been humanely euthanized with love and dignity, I can't even comprehend knowingly subjecting them to that, pregnant mares no less.

apparently no comments as yet from the asses, and i'll be surprised if they do say anything.
what could they say? uhhhh.....ummm.....

LARHAGE 07-11-2012 02:34 PM

I remember reading an article in Bloodhorse about the farm in Texas and how the whole family are horse lovers ..blah blah blah. NO horse lover would subject a horse to the cruel torture of a Mexican slaughterhouse, and doing it to pregnant mares is even more despicable, these mares could very easily have been given to someone, they were very well bred mares, this just sickens me.

Remember Me Rescue called in their cavalry kudos to the Keens and their group.

https://www.facebook.com/REMEMBERMERESCUE

"All mares are safe and we are contacting the original breeders or next of kin to let them know and offer the horses back to them first before we adopt them to new homes. We will oust more info on them when it becomes available."

If anyone wants to help you may contact them here.

They are disgraceful. A shame to horse racing.

I just don't get this kind of stuff. Giving a hoss who couldn't outrun a fat man to some 13 year old kid felt as good as getting a picture taken in the winners circle. Driving by that farm and seeing that hoss fat and happy ten years later was even better. Do people not recognize the fact that America would be just some little country, if not for the Horse.

Have a friend who creatively based her master's thesis in History on that very same subject a few years ago, learned so much while helping her edit, so true so true...

i think the horse gets too much credit in that regard. if we had to move west using oxen, the move would still have been made. our growth had more to do with escaping homelands, escaping crowding, wanting a new start, avoiding religious issues, and being far from other countries, giving us room and time to grow. but it's more romantic to just thank horses.
after all, native americans had horses-fat lot of good it did them.

The Assmussen's, Keith, responds to the allegations they purposely sent the mares to an auction frequented by kill buyers.

Steve has a history of dumping horses via the claim box that wind up in pretty bad circumstances, so I don't have a lot of sympathy for him.

Seems these horses - old mares, at the end of their breeding lives - were dumped at this sale, with registration papers.

Not the way I'd handle it, if they were my mares. If a mare gives me foal after foal, she gets to live out her retirement life in my pasture, with good care. Not dumped for $500 as a last profit.

I don't disagree, although in all fairness it is reportedly his father, Keith, from their training center in Laredo. And again in all fairness I felt their delayed response should be posted.
There also seems to be some disagreement in the horse world as to whether or not Kill buyers go this auction at Round Mountain. That being said I tend to believe the "underground" group directed by this Deborah Jones that kill buyers do in fact go to this auction, but that is my personal opinion. And there is sadly the possibility that they were in fact unaware or just never bothered to find out that kill buyers go to this auction.
It is a difficult thing and truly the stuff of nightmares that these people, mostly women, do to try and find TB's at these auctions that are often legit but the straggling ones left do end up to with the kill buyers. The worst part being they go to Mexico where it is a beyond brutal slaughter.
Whatever the outcome would have been with these mares they are now safe thanks to the efforts of many and the ability of Donna and Dallas Keen's group to rally up and get them quickly transported out to safe haven at Remember Me Rescue and their affiliate farms that can take horses on a minutes notice.

I have a problem with owners dumping 15- to 20-year-old used-up broodmares in a public auction, and expecting us to believe that anybody other than a killer would even consider purchasing them or look twice at them.

And for every horse volunteers identify and purchase out of auctions like these, there are five that go to the killer. And there are the ones they have to leave behind, of other breeds. It's a terrible, heartbreaking thing to volunteer for. These women are threatened, have to remain secretive at times, etc. Sure, these cheap local auctions are great if you want to go buy a cheap pony for your kid, or a grade horse to put 30-60 days on and sell, but those are the rare stories, not the usual.

There's a reason the minimum price for any horse sold at Keeneland is set by the auction house at $1000, and it's because that's too much for a killer to pay.

LARHAGE 07-12-2012 11:17 PM

I don't for one second believe they didn't know this was an auction frequented by kill buyers, I can guarantee you most horse owners of any breed know full well where the local kill buyer auctions are, most certainly the biggest breeders in Texas, the bottom line is they simply didn't give a crap, easy come, easy go, they clearly don't love the horses, it's simply the money.

The leaving behind is the hardest, heartbreaking and saddest part of the mission, it's almost like you have to put blinders on, it's so overwhelming. And yes they are threatened and have to do this very covertly or else they will be banned from the auctions. Nevermind having to act that the conditions of these animals doesn't bother you otherwise you're pegged as a rescue person.

Anybody that has any sense doesn't believe them, but I have to say I'm always surprised at just how stupid people are when you don't expect them to be even as the "biggest breeders in Texas".
I saw where someone posted somewhere else how it was BS that he was unaware kill buyers attended the auction..what he was unaware of was that the stealth rescue groups would be there.
