Default 48% of U.S. is poor, low income

WASHINGTON --

Squeezed by rising living costs, a record number of Americans — nearly 1 in 2 — have fallen into poverty or are scraping by on earnings that classify them as low income.

The latest census data depict a middle class that's shrinking as unemployment stays high and the government's safety net frays. The new numbers follow years of stagnating wages for the middle class that have hurt millions of workers and families.

It's all the fault of the unions.

You mean like the UAW union, who agreed to invalidate all previous pension contracts, and completely re-worked those agreements to help save the auto industry in this country?

Well, as long as toll booth collectors that are earning $40,000 a year, are not allowed to work an extra 20 hours a week and earn $60,000 a year. Why should they wax luxurious in the lap of their cushy union jobs? Stay poor, you union thugs!

Should praise be given for the rescue of an industry that you caused to need rescuing?

At least many UAW workers are skilled labor unlike toll collectors. We could teach monkeys to collect tolls. From the comments made by Alabama Stakes they may already have.

Wow. You call Somer "witch boy" due to his religion, and you call Alabama Stakes a monkey.

You're quite something.

That's as nasty as calling someone a "j-w boy".

Nice to see you doubled down on what you called AS.

I'm with bigrun on this. During the mid-70's, I worked in the Revenue Department of the Jones Beach State Parkway Authority on Long Island, and part of my job was to oversee the reconciliation of toll receipts turned in by each collector. Of course, it was a different time back then, but none of these guys were making big bucks, and there was lots of "pocket slippage" going on by them to make ends meet.

Used to be fun sifting through the "automatic" lanes receipts for slugs, foreign coins, and subway tokens. Remember going into the NYCTA in downtown Brooklyn every couple of months with a huge swag of tokens to turn into a check for the Authority.

No Riot. It's mostly the people who are crunching the numbers. Read the article again and carefully sift through the bullsh!t. If the "new measures of poverty takes into account medical, commuting, and other living costs" why do the new measures of inflation no longer take into account food and energy costs? It's called Unemployment and it's called Inflation. Economics 101. There is so much Crapaganda in this AP piece I had to see if it was an editorial. People in this article are being called poor who are living pretty good

As I said earlier, at least you didn't call me a warlock which is a negative term to us. Now "boy" is an interesting name to call a 65 year old but I'll take that as a compliment rather than relating back to the Civil Rights days.
