![]() Varty is one of the great chemists in the harness business. Proctor brought a few to Stga Harness last year and proceeded to run off the screen off some bad lines. They usually go to places they can beat the testing system. Doubt they would show up at NYRA if detention barn was still in place. EPO was what everyone claimed they were famous for.

Why is it these EPO horses don't have Hgb or Hematocrit values that are elevated out of the norm that would identify them as cheaters? Is there something different about horse blood counts that allows them to remain undetected without the EPO assay? |

![]() They do hve high hgb and hematocrit numbers but there is an edge to be gained in a fairly slight elevation. For example a typical hematocrit value for a healthy racehorse is typically between 32-42. EPO may raise it to 45-50 which is an advantage but not completely out of the ordinary especially in the summer where dehydration can lead to high numbers as well.
