Who is she? She has Digger Karakorum first off the claim Wednesday Race 1 at Aqueduct? I kinda like the horse, but I have never heard of her.

Her name is Kirsten Proctor and I believe that she is a harness trainer who used to be Nick Zito's foreman in New York, is married to harness trainer Nat Varty and they are trying to transition into training Thoroughbreds.

Appears to like to chase slot fueled purses by the timing of her entry into NY Thoroughbreds!

The first of quite a few I'd imagine, Nick. Inner = :$::$::$:

Can you name any successfull trainers of both? The only name that comes to my mind is Procino, not to say he was too good at either.

This will be an interesting inner meet which could offer some excellent betting, there is a good chance that field sizes will be up considerably with the new purses. I expect that we will be seeing a lot of trainers in the Big A entries that we have not seen in the past.

I have done well with the inner in the past and I am particularly looking forward to this years inner meet. I, for one, am glad to see the Aqueduct main go as I can't pick a damn winner there!

Varty is one of the great chemists in the harness business. Proctor brought a few to Stga Harness last year and proceeded to run off the screen off some bad lines. They usually go to places they can beat the testing system. Doubt they would show up at NYRA if detention barn was still in place. EPO was what everyone claimed they were famous for.

A detention barn wouldn't affect EPO.

Chuck

Why is it these EPO horses don't have Hgb or Hematocrit values that are elevated out of the norm that would identify them as cheaters? Is there something different about horse blood counts that allows them to remain undetected without the EPO assay?

They do hve high hgb and hematocrit numbers but there is an edge to be gained in a fairly slight elevation. For example a typical hematocrit value for a healthy racehorse is typically between 32-42. EPO may raise it to 45-50 which is an advantage but not completely out of the ordinary especially in the summer where dehydration can lead to high numbers as well.
