My grandfather would always tell me "better to be a living coward than a dead hero" and made me promise I'd never join the military.
Makes me think of the line by that great philosopher, Bret Maverick: "My Pappy always said, 'A coward dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies but one.' A thousand to one is pretty good odds."
