War Photos
 

I found these pictures in with other pictures in a box of old family pictures of my grandpa and uncle.

I assume this was World War 2 since he "wasted four years of my life - the worst four years of my life" in that one.

Those are cool photos. The war in the Pacific was savage. My fathers friend used to tell me stories of his exploits. He was shot down twice. Once flying supplies into China over the mountains, while transporting gold, the other time over the Philippines.

He was in a POW camp and was nearly executed before a guerrilla raid saved him and his buddies.

One thing though, that first photo. I didn't realize you had African American ancestors.

No relation.

Both of my grandparents are dead now -- or I'd ask them about these photos and how they got them.

Yeah, keep posting them.

The Pacific war is the most interesting bit of history to me.

Brutal and savage fighting that made the war in Western Europe look pretty tame.

The legendary "Brown Bomber" Joe Lewis (and possibly Bill Clinton 2nd from the left) in Erie together.





Here's one of my pops with a killer 70's porn stache. I think Linda Rice's sister might have ridden this one.

Could you imagine the fireworks if that first picture hit the newswires today.

10-1 it's from the new guinea campaign.

the decapitated heads of japanese soldiers were a strange regular feature. it was the meeting of a native culture with industrial warfare.

I was thinking there or from a liberated POW camp, say in the Philippines.

That guy I mentioned earlier in this thread, when he was liberated from his POW camp, he took the base commanders gun and shot him through the mouth, then took his samurai sword and lopped off the head.

He kept both the sword and skull as trophies.

The sword was beautiful.

Thanks for sharing those, Doug. My grandfather (Navy veteran) never missed a WW2 movie or TV miniseries, but he would never talk about the war. He was very elderly when Saving Private Ryan came out, but insisted on being dropped off at the theater by himself- he wanted to watch it alone. My other grandfather came out of the war with a piece of metal in his head and spent the rest of his life drinking.

My grandfather would always tell me "better to be a living coward than a dead hero" and made me promise I'd never join the military.

Makes me think of the line by that great philosopher, Bret Maverick: "My Pappy always said, 'A coward dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies but one.' A thousand to one is pretty good odds."
