10fs at CD is a distance where I don't have pars to make a pace figure - it's not a commonly run distance.

But yeah, the 2000 Classic pace was certainly a lot slower than this years.

The 4th quarter fraction is often a pretty good tell in races at that distance. That's the part of the race where stretch runners need to start making up considerable ground. It's a hell of a lot easier a task for stretch runners when that 4th quarter is in 26 flat - when it's in 24 flat - they better have a rocket up their ass.

Captain Steve almost had that rocket in Tiznow's Classic.

In Awesome Again's Classic, the opening half went in 47 3/5. The remaining splits were 24 2/5, 25 1/5, 24 4/5. Awesome Again was 7th by 3-3/4 at the quarter pole.

There was an incredible bias toward speed in tiznow's classic. No way captain Steve would get by him either way but especially not on that track that day.

In 98 the track was much more fair and slower.

Captain Steve was a pretty underrated horse. He was a VERY good 2-year-old ... for whatever reason the first half of his 3yo season was weak ... but he really turned the corner in the second half of his 3yo season season through his easy Dubai World Cup win.

He could have easily given Tiznow all he wanted in a fairly run race.

I am somewhat jaded because i backed him the race before in the goodwood. Watching that race, there was little doubt as to who was better at the time in my opinion. No doubt, captain Steve was nice though he looks like he was born in the wrong year.

I don't think the Goodwood proved Tiznow was the better of the two horses at all.

Tiznow was a "lone F" loose on the lead front-runner in there - and Captain Steve had to act as his own rabbit to try to apply some mid-race pressure on Tiznow.

That race, was actually the highest Beyer Tiznow ever ran in his career. He got a 119 in there. He got a 116 when he won the BC Classic at 9/1 over Giant's Causeway next time out. A 117 when he won the Santa Anita Handicap by 5 lengths at age 4. And a 117 when he repeated in the BC Classic at Belmont the following year. Captain Steve really stretched him every yard of the way in there.

Look at the surrounding races in Captain Steve's form ... and you'll see the Classic wasn't a good race for him speed figure wise.

Certainly, he ran a super race in the Classic that year .. but the pace did hinder him enough.
