Jason Shandler breaks it down pretty well, I think:

Horse of the Year is Simple: Blame

This was a comment left below the article by a reader. Name look familiar!!

Zenyatta 5 grade 1 wins and 1 grade 1 second. Blame 3 grade 1 wins and 1 grade 1 second. For all intents and purposes The BC classic was a tie, with Blame the edge on his Favorite track. Zenyatta Horse Of The Year.......

except the classic wasn't a tie.

and i love the delicious irony involved here...with people criticizing blame for being lightly raced, or with him winning on his 'home track'. lmao....where's all that criticism been regarding a certain other lightly raced horse who's made exactly one trip west of the mississippi??

I had to stop reading the comments to Jason's article. One cubic foot of cerebral concrete by so many.

I wished Zenyatta could have pulled it off. She didn't. Blame got it done, and he is deserving of HOY. Going into the BCC, there was no clear cut candidate for the award. The Classic was the deciding factor.

But I do know this much. From now until January when they hand out the Eclipse Awards, the battle will rage on with Zenyatta fans repeating over and over and over ad nausem their reasons why Zenyatta should win HOY. And, the Blame or Goldikova fans will repeat over and over etc. why each of them should win HOY. There will be no straying from opinion in any of the camps - just constant, head pounding, mind numbing, repetitious reasons why.

As of this post, I shall say no more on the subject. If I had a vote, it would be for Blame. I'm saddened that Zenyatta did not win, but emotions aside - she lost and she'll have to run another year if HOY is the quest (which I think it is) of the Moss's.

I can't even bring myself to read the comments. I glanced at a couple at random, and it made me scared that there was a nationwide kool-aid shortage. Did anybody see what they said to poor Claire Novak on her FB page? She said something that I believe was along the lines of Blame being HOTY, and the comments about her showing her true colors and being a Zenyatta-hater were just so mean-spirited.

Claire's been so vocal in her appreciation of Zenyatta. It was really unfair.
