James Worthy was a 17 point a game player that didnt rebound much, pass or play great defense. Arguably the worst modern player in the hall of fame. 17-5-3 for his career.

Yes he was better defensively. I don't remember saying his entire body of work isn't important. I just brought up that he quit on his team when they needed him. You might not think that is important, but some might.

I love how being a 17 point a game player on a team of 3 hall of famers isn't important. Averaging 21 points in the game in the playoffs isn't important.

What does playing with three hall of famers have to do with averaging 17 a game? And that was in a high scoring era. Did they tell him not to rebound?

And I was never a big fan of Pippens or the Bulls. But he was a better player than James Worthy.

It all boils down to what that particular team needs. In halfcourt offense Worthy was infinitely better than Scottie Pippen. Pippen was actually pretty useless in the halfcourt offense.
He was, however, good in transition, and one of the best defensive players in the history of the sport.

Pippen is just a really hard player to judge, both because he had a fairly unique skill-set, and because he played most of his career with the greatest athlete in the history of time.

Worthy played wing on a fast break offense with the best point guard in history. I could have scored 15 and grabbed 5 rebounds a game in that offense with magic.

Pippen was better in my opinion. You could run an offense through Pippen as Chicago did lots of times with or without Jordan. When I say "run the offense" I mean simply that he could be the primary ball handler. Pippen had that unique ability to fill the wing or the run break. The list of guys that can actually do that effectively is smaller than people think.

He could also play the point on the press on defense although Grant played that role until he left for orlando. It is a special defensive player that can play both the point and the front wing in a press defense. It takes a huge degree of versatility as you have to be long and agile enough to play point and quick enough to play wing.

Worthy shouldn't be underrated though and I think that you may be unintentionally doing that in your posts. He wasn't just a wing filler on a fast break. He had one of the best first steps in the game and presented a major matchup problem for most teams with his size and quickness on the wing. A top 50 player? No, but certainly from 1983-1989 one of the best small forwards in the game.

The funny thing is as a Knick fan I spent most of the 90's battling with bandwagon Bulls fans over pippen since it was really hard to make much of a case against Jordan. But looking back he was the glue to that team and there really hasnt been anyone like him since.

As with any good employee, they (Cleveland) needed James more than he needed them .
