The same could be said for Hurrican Run and Shirrocco. They didnt run their race. Deep Impact ran about as well as he possible could. He had the lead and let TWO horses go by and one of the horses was a mare.

If none of the big three ran their races, and Deep Impact outran them off a 3 month layoff, travel to the other side of the world, up closer than his liking due to lack of pace and lost to a horse which won it's last 4 in a row (3 at Longchamp), doesn't that make him their superior?

Give Deep Impact a prep race, a pace, and his usual positioning toward the back of the field and he's the winner IMO.

That same mare, Pride, beat Hurricane Run earlier in this year and just lost by a half length to Hurricane Run and Shirocco in the Prix Foy. She almost got them in that race as well. She was coming to them at the end. She had every right to fire big time in this race. It didn't surprise me at all that she almost won the race.

Deep Impact clearly did not run his race. Quite frankly, I think the horse was short from the layoff, and he obviously was a little closer to the pace than he would have liked to have been. If the big three ever face again, Deep Impact will hand it to them. Deep Impact proved to me that he really is the best turf horse in the world in this race.

With that being said, I don't think Hurricane Run is himself. He wasn't himself in the Prix Foy. He didn't switch leads until he hit the wire in the Prix Foy. His gallop doesn't look as good as it used to. I think that he is having some soundness issues.

Yeah, I think he was a little short too, and think that he was much the best in that field of horses considering that he was also incredibly close to the pace. The horse is the real deal. That race only made me believe in his abilities even more.

Ditto. He was a lot closer to the pace than normal. I was impressed.

How could anyone train a horse and not have him fully cranked for what is generally considered the top race in the world. Lots od excuses for the also rans. To remind everyone it was Nail and Pride 1/2 and they were honest pace and didnt have the race served up to them.

i don't take anything away from rail link and pride. they ran great races and deserve their accolades.

as for deep impact; i don't know if you've seen him run before but what you saw in the arc is not his style of running. he was too keen early, rank , on the muscle...whatever you want to call it. his usual style is to settle back behind horses and come running late. the way he ran in the arc is very typical of a horse coming off of a layoff. i guess the connections didn't think he would react that way but he did. and it cost 'em. big time.

I'm sorry, but Deep Impact hardly ever races that close up to the front... to finish that gamely, I'm impressed. He is one hell of a horse.

Apparently (according to either DRF or Bloodstock Journal, I don't remember which) Deep Impact's odds were driven down by a very large group of Japanese fans that came to France just to root for Deep Impact. Once the big part of that money hit the tote board, other money came in on the rest of the field to balance it, but I don't think the "other money" ever fully compensated for the massive Japanese money bet on Deep Impact. It was a good opportunity for anyone looking for an inefficient market.

It reminds me of the good ol' days when pools were not mingled. When there was an East/West confrontation in the Ky Derby, you could get a guaranteed win by betting the East Coast horse at a West Coast track, and vice versa. The most extreme case I remember was Mr. Frisky, who went off at something like 1-10 in Puerto Rico for the Derby. I think he was something like 3-1 at Churchill. (long time ago, numbers could be way off)
