Still should have got at least a year behind bars, but for some reason our country lets you get off big time if you admit guilt and feel remorse. I dont think admitting anything or being sorry should make a difference in ANY type of crime, but in the USA its a-okay.

I really dont understand how the bolded makes a difference.
It shouldn't. Basically he offered a ton of money to the family of the victim in exchange for their pressing authorities to go lenient on him. Trust me, you could have done the same thing, been remorseful about it, and would still be spending a long time in jail.
