Why did this horse get a statue? He was a nice horse but other then the breakdown which has its own dark side as well I just dont get the all time reverence.

I think he was one of the greats of modern times (although I didn't in 2006, and bet Bernardini in the Preakness). The more I learn about the game, the more he impresses me from a pure race-watching opinion.
but obviously the statue is because of the emotional symbolism and popularity of the Barbaro story |

When I saw the thread about an incident marring the Churchill works I just assumed it was this story.
