Barbaro Statue

I love it. Good ceremony before the unveiling. I also like the quote from Eric Lidell.

true conversation:

Me: I liked your article on the Barbaro statue. But it doesn't look like Barbaro.
Ed: It's not Barbaro, it's a statue of Barbaro.
Me: when they make a statue of me, I hope it actually looks like me.

With my luck, when they make a statue of me, it will look like Barbaro.

Why did this horse get a statue? He was a nice horse but other then the breakdown which has its own dark side as well I just dont get the all time reverence.

I think he was one of the greats of modern times (although I didn't in 2006, and bet Bernardini in the Preakness). The more I learn about the game, the more he impresses me from a pure race-watching opinion.

but obviously the statue is because of the emotional symbolism and popularity of the Barbaro story

When I saw the thread about an incident marring the Churchill works I just assumed it was this story.

Pretty simple I'd say. Whether you agree or not, like it or not, this horse has an incredible main stream following. No need to rehash what we already know, but the ability to showcase racing to bettors and casual fans a like is a good direction to go in. There is room for both.

If whoever had this statue put up thinks it can help attract fans or draw people to appreciate the sport itself, then I am all for it.

I don't like the quote. Seems strange to me, and I'm a Barbaro fan.
