it's not that the gmail account holders get spam... unfortunately, most spammers have switched from aol or hotmail to gmail, so a bunch of the spam mails come from bogus gmail accounts.

I have a gmail account. It's not my primary email account, but I have no complaints.

I have a gmail account. Not my primary. Seems to work well. No spam.

BUT -- who can tell me how to turn off that conversation view in the inbox?
