I liked Patena's race in the Lecomte a hell of a lot better than I liked the winners race ... but I'd really need to get a huge price on him. I think Old Fashioned is the most likely Derby winner - but the time to get down on him would have been after his big fig Delaware Park allowance win. Yes, he won the Remsen while getting the final 3 furlongs in cyclonic fast time that hasn't been seen in that race since Alydar was cutting into Believe It's lead late in a super fast Remsen - where the final time still features the stakes record some 31 years later. However, Old Fashioned had as perfect a trip as a speed horse will ever get in that race... and might have even become overrated off of that performance even though he capitalized on all that good fortune in such a big way. |
