I've found the chicklets annoying too.
However, watching the derby, I almost wished they had them in some form. A 20 horse field and an overhead view, I had no clue who was where. It would be interesting how the general public (non horse racing fans) thought of it as they watched the NBC broadcast. Surely they had no idea where there horse was, and would probably love it.

Chiclets werent needed in this year's Derby. Only 2 horses did any sort of running. The only horse I watched throughout was Hard Spun until Street Sense made his patented rail move. What happened to the other 18 horses this year? Funny day to not show up.
