Your teacher's claims could have been accurate. He taught at U of Michigan, many summer programs at Middlebury College in Vermont, and most notably at Amherst College in Mass. Quite remarkable for a man who never graduated from college, but received something like 40 honorary degrees over his lifetime.

I think that you would enjoy reading his poetry. They are so simple on the surface and contain so much depth.
