Cal, reading this thread brought to mind Robert Frost's poem Fire and Ice, which we all probably read in 8th grade. In case you've forgotten, here it is again:

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice

After that thought, let's get back to racing. Who do you like in the Sword Dancer?

Speaking of the Sword Dancer, is anyone else bothered by the number of runners that have been entered in this race by what amounts to the same ownership group? While there are small differences in some of the LLC's that are partners in the first tier of ownership, it appears that #1 Adhamo, #5 Rockemperor, #7 Tribhuvan and #8 Soldier Rising are essentially owned by the same group. The first three are trained by Chad Brown and the latter by Christophe Clement (who also has another entrant for another owner). I guess for stakes races there is no requirement that there must be coupled entries where common ownership is involved, but as a bettor it troubles me. How do you ascertain whether each of the entrants is equally well intended?

If you look at Race 7, there is an entry due to common ownership even though there are different trainers, so the exception appears to only apply to stakes races. Probably designed to increase the number of betting interests, which in turn increases the betting handle, but how is the wagering integrity protected?

I'll pass over my constant dislike of the huge number of NYRA stakes races, especially turf races, in which Chad Brown has multiple uncoupled entrants - having three of the five entrants in the Ballston Spa speaks for itself.

End of my rant - back to handicapping the Travers card.

I don't think I ever read that poem. Although my memory is not so great these days. I did read his poem about the road not taken and I remember another one about walls making good neighbors. When I took my first college course, it was Freshman English at the State University of New York at Buffalo. It was at night because I was in the Air Force by day. My teacher claimed to have had Robert Frost as his professor.

Your teacher's claims could have been accurate. He taught at U of Michigan, many summer programs at Middlebury College in Vermont, and most notably at Amherst College in Mass. Quite remarkable for a man who never graduated from college, but received something like 40 honorary degrees over his lifetime.

I think that you would enjoy reading his poetry. They are so simple on the surface and contain so much depth.

Robert Frost truly a fav pf mine. I too dabble in rhyme and have since my college days. Prehaps I'll share few here but under a separate thread so we can keep horse racing to horse racing. More to follow

I have written poetry a little here and there, but most of it long forgotten. I do remember writing one to a girl when I was in college. She was Miss America beautiful. Unfortunately, I am more like Barney Fife so it didn't work out. Sorry, Don, I'll be good now and turn my attention to the task at hand. As for the Sword Dancer, I think I'll go with Broome. Not a picture of consistency, but seems to be getting some breaks for this and very nearly won the BC Turf last year.
