That sucks. Will that impact his overall quality of life / ability to race (if that’s even in the plans)?

Immediate reaction is that this benefits the front runners and hurts some of the deep closers as OB was likely going to be near the pace. I’m guessing Maximum Security or Game Winner ends up as the favorite now.

Baffert horses will be favorites.

I only threw MS in there because I do think the 3 Bafferts will split the voting a bit.

Ya there’s enough money to go around. I expect three Baffert stop three favs. This is a big scratch.

Wonder how much this will effect the pace, I know he stalks, but he definitely was going to be running in the top 3 or 4

This is absurd. It’s also the type of thing that damages the game.

I’m going to assume you’re referring to his selections and comments from the Xpressbet Wagering Guide. Those were due last week. Prior to the horses final work - one that received universal praise.

There are plenty of legitimate Handicapping angles that would lead someone to oppose this horse.

There were a lot of things pointing to a possible regression with OB and the likeliest pace scenario didn’t seem to benefit him compared to some of the horses mentioned in Steve’s selections. Also, Steve included OB in an exacta wager with Improbable and Max Sec. In short, agreed that it’s absurd.

My biggest question is: does Mike Smith end up anywhere after this?

This puts Maximum Security alone up front. Omaha would have pulled to the front. Don't over handicap. There are only five contenders unless extremely sloppy.

Vekoma is just as fast as him, if not faster.

This bumps Game Winner to the dreaded #15 gate. Something to consider.
