That is why at the yearling sales and also 2YO sales most of the horses aren't named. People want to name the horse they've spent money for. Any consignor will tell you that, they told me if I was selling it to not name it.

With claimers it's a different story, names are almost never changed.

People who don't care will bid, those who do won't.

Names CAN NOT be changed of horses that have already run, unless it is something that slipped through the registry, like years ago a horse in California had its named changed after running

FYI, a name change is like $200 I think, so a name change is not going to be scaring anyone away from bidding on a horse. As long as the horse hasn't run, you can change the name a million times, for a fee per time.

Well, no, it can be changed post-start of racing career, but it's just not easy to do. Sounds like you're gonna have to really have a good reason other than 'Eh, I don't like it.' Doesn't say what that reason is so I suspect they wanna have leeway to just go 'nope.' I'm sure reasons have included realization of something offensive or legally problematic after the fact. Per the Jockey Club's site under rule 6 (relevant part in bold):
Quote:
D. A foal's name may be changed at any time prior to starting in its first race. Ordinarily, no name change will be permitted after a horse has started in its first race or has been used for breeding purposes. However, in the event a name must be changed after a horse has started in its first race, both the old and new names should be used until the horse has raced three times following the name change. The prescribed fee (see Fee Schedule) and the Certificate of Foal Registration must accompany any request to the Registry Office for a change of name.
As for the cost of a name change, I think you're giving too little credit to some people being weirdly superstitious about it. Not everybody is, but I guarantee you there are plenty that identify with the 'don't change the name of a boat' thing.

They have had some nice horses and an interesting social media presence. Too bad they are getting out of the game.
