i'm not thinking it would be considered gun 'violence' if you were cleaning your gun and it went off and shot you.

I think the numbers are also hard to count because local law enforcement has a lot of latitude on whether to declare a gun death a homicide or not. A child shooting his sibling can be called an "accidental death" rather than an "accidental homicide."

(Note: homicide doesn't mean deliberate; it just means killing of a person by another person.)
