If someone lost their job, as a direct result of using poor judgement in attempting to save their job, it would be ironic.
If a terrorist attack occurred on American soil, where this cocktail party was being held- it would be tragically unfortunate, but not ironic. Regardless of what that Senator's primary responsibilities are.
Theoretically, it would likely be assumed that she single-handedly would not have thwarted the attack had she attended the meeting rather than then party, thus zero incongruity.
