Default That was quick

Is Havre de Grace sold overseas too?

Hope we don't lose another Sunday Silence type stallion opportunity.

What a bitch. I was hoping to see this horse some day on the farm. I'm getting bad flashbacks to the 90"s and Sunday Silence. I hope he has as successful a stud career as SS.

Pretty much impossible.

Sunday Silence was a great stallion and he had a far better pedigree than IHA.

Sunday Silence had a big turf pedigree that IHA doesn't have. He was by Halo and his dam was a Graded Stakes winner on turf.

SS was also a much better race horse.

He'll have some nice stablemates anyway...

I wish him well. Love him to death and yeah... I hope he comes back home before too long.

I enjoyed reading the responses to the announcement on the I'll Have Another Facebook page. One person wished J. Paul Reddam would get rectal cancer while Successful Dan could only muster a frowny face.

I know this'll sound like stud duty redboarding, but I had a feeling this would happen about a month ago should IHA fail to win the TC (didn't think he'd never even get to try for it in the first place obviously). The more I looked into IHA's pedigree, the more I came to the conclusion that IHA would be a prime target for the Japanese to try to buy should the TC win not happen. They've shown an interest in doing that in the past with dual classic winners like Silver Charm and Charismatic, but there's an additional angle here that's Flower Alley specific.

They've got Princess Olivia, his dam, as well as Lilacs and Lace, a daughter of Flower Alley. I feel like there's more of a connection than that, but I can't remember what right now. They've obviously got an interest in that family. I'm interested to see whether the Japanese have ever tried to buy Flower Alley. I wouldn't be surprised. Even if his recent successes somehow end up being flukes, or he isn't able to capitalize on the improved books he's likely to get in the next year or two, he's not likely to be for sale for some time. Hence, IHA being sought by the Japanese. They tend to throw enough money to get what they want and no Triple Crown win coupled with the injury induced retirement probably sealed IHA's fate.

Since the article says the terms of the sale were kept private, is there any speculation/rumor what the amount could be?

Default I'll Have Another off to Japan

Truly sad that we can not keep a horse of this caliber in the States for breeding. Best of luck IHA as you fly off to your new home....

Please.. 'truly sad'? As explained here by many and elsewhere by anyone in bloodstock, there's no market for him here. NONE. If you want a horse of his caliber you can breed to Flower Alley and get one. Or Distorted Humor if you want one the caliber of Flower Alley and can afford it. Or go to OBS and try to craft one for $25k-$40.

Here's an interesting piece from Lenny Shulman at Bloodhorse on the lack of an American market for I'll Have Another, and how the situation eerily parallels that of Sunday Silence.

The only things similar between the two are the KD/Preakness wins and the inability to bring high prices as unraced horses and stud prospects.

Sunday Silence was much better a runner. Sunday Silence had a much better sire. Sunday Silence raced into his four year old season. Sunday Silence's dam was a nice stakes winning mare. Want more?

Quite literally the only similarity is what I'll have Another and Sunday Silence did on the first Saturday in May and three weeks later.

Yeah, although it's sad to see him go, there really isn't a market, it's just a no brainer for Mr. Reddam, and the interest of the Japanese in Flower Alley's family put that writing on the wall awhile back. He'll arguably have a better chance of success there than here, not having to compete with his sire and grandsire. If someone wants his particular genes badly enough, he's not behind an iron curtain. You could get to him if you had to. Import a foal in utero or something. I doubt anybody's gonna unless he ended up being the next Sunday Silence. I'm just saying you could.

Isn't there a possibility that he could've won the Triple Crown, gotten injured before the Travers instead, and still ended up in Japan? Is the cache of being the TC winner really enough to keep him here?

His female family is what it is. The Distorted Humor and Flower Alley situations would still affect his value in the US market. Case Clay speculated about what a TC winner would be worth, and I'm not sure that the number Reddam got offered for a dual Classic winning IHA jumps that much post-Belmont win vs. what the Japanese would be willing to offer. Would IHA need a TC win and a strong rest of his 3yo season to earn his spot here? Does he have to race at 4? I got the impression that a 4yo career was in the cards and wondered if that wasn't to try to improve the offer they'd get from US farms. Didn't work for Sunday Silence.

Imma Down Hoss....your looking at this totally different than me. I am just stating that it is SAD for this to happen. I am not looking to breed to anything puhlleezz.. just not a fan of the situation at hand. Someone needs a vacation...
