Outstanding holiday weekend of action ended Monday on a high note with Eoin Harty’s ‘Best Value’ top tab Victor’s Cry stealing the Shoemaker Mile at 21-1. That result buoyed the bankroll on the deep Memorial Day card of action across the country which was highlighted by Quality Road’s efficient Met Mile win over noble Musket Man. The leading Horse of the Year contender nearing the midway point of 2010, Quality Road earned a 114 Beyer for his performance, and may be on his way to a special, Ghostzapper kind of campaign. Hope you did well and enjoyed the three days of excellent action. Belmont Week underway, with nice lead-up cards to the big Saturday that marks the end of the ’10 Triple Crown trail.

Tricky Belmont slate proved impossible Sunday setting up a double carryover of nearly $200k into the big Memorial Day Metropolitan Handicap card. Was pleased, and relieved, to open the Holiday Weekend with the best day of capping/wagering I’ve had in ages. Only a couple of tough to make winners held back an enormous afternoon, as Biancone’s Whoopi Kitten (MTH 6th) and Galluscio’s Pork Chop Sandra (BEL 7th) stymied the Shore’s .50 P5 and Elmont late quad. The $300+ P4 to end the day in Jersey and $135 8th-10th P3 in NY went a long way towards profitability on the day, as did Pat Kelly’s $18 ‘on tap’ Best Value Spa City Fever in the BEL 8th. There were a number of nice hits during second half of the Oceanport card including $118, $130 and $62 P3’s, and a complete sweep of the nightcap’s top 4 ‘straight’.

P6 carryovers at Belmont ($45.5k) and Churchill ($54k) are remnants of the Saturday action, and I’ve looked at New York’s, which is tricky. May get to the Monmouth action as well, but need to have an eye towards Monday’s huge slate with ATR’s broadcast coming to you live from Belmont. Note that Saturday’s .50 P5 at MTH handled a bulbous $216k! Enjoy Day 2 of the Memorial Day Weekend racefest!

Took beat on Churchill P4 when Lukas’ Hamazing Destiny wired sprint set in the feature, and found the result tough to understand considering the Salt Lake 4yo had shown no speed since last November. Romans’ West Pointer Belo Sorto was a complete flop as the top tab, somehow unable to keep up with the mundane :23.2, :46.2 opening quarters set by the winner, when in his skien of 4 straight wins he’s been attended sub :45 half miles. Hope you did OK. There’s plenty of terrific racing the next 72 hours with stakes action everywhere you look, so despite what feels like an unending period of bad decisions and frustrating results, I’m anxious to dig in the heels and find some spots to score.

Continue to be unable to close out a quad play as mundane sequence went sideways in the Belmont nightcap with Maylan Studart (!) inflicting the pain in the final yards. 7-1 and hard-to-love Stormy Success overhauled favorite and anchor leg play Pavoratti’s Soul whom Javy Castellano kept closer to the sharp pace than necessary. Though the will-pay was just $100 on the $48 play, it would have been a nice boost to the day which saw the 6th, 7th and 8th produce chalky but OK returns on top and in the exotics. Hope you did well.

We’re on the eve of a huge holiday weekend of racing, with twilight cards (PHA, CD, AP, PID) and the usual Friday Late Night at the ‘Wood (HOL). Redboard King (PHA 5th-6p) goes today with Tony Black, and gives me a chance to play a Dee Tee race live on ATR for only the 2nd time in the 3 year existence of the Stable. Tony was great l;ast night on the show remembering Champion filly sprinter My Juliet, as PHA runs their $250k race in her honor Saturday. It was a big day for jockey conversation on ATR Thursday, as a segment with Ron Turcotte turned into an hour long discussion about the Hall of Famer’s experiences on Northern Dancer, Tom Rolfe, Shuvee and Fort Marcy in addition to the better known mounts on Rive Ridge and Secretariat.
