KEE P5, Hi-5 C/O’s entice after up and down Saturday

Sunday, October 9th, 2011

Kind of an in and out afternoon Saturday at Belmont and Keeneland with the ‘ins’ coming at New York and ‘outs’ at Kentucky. Couldn’t get lucky in the Belmont P4, but $200 straight triple in the Jamaica with $16.00 Western Aristocrat on top, and a couple $65+ P3’s kept the ball in the air as the day wore on. After a good day at Keeneland for Friday’s opener, it was more of a struggle Saturday, but as discussed on ATR this week, that’s the nature of the poly main track racing there.

Top human stories from Saturday were the individual riding efforts of Corey Nakatani (6 wins in 7 mounts tying BEL record) and Julien Leparoux (4 wins after 4 Friday), and Mrs and Mrs. Ramsey winning their 2nd and 3rd stakes of the weekend in the HAW Gold Cup (Headache) and TCA (Holiday for Kitten) after Friday’s Alcibiades (Stephanie’s Kitten).

On the four legged front, Gio Ponti continued to add to his Hall of Fame resume with a second facile Shadwell Mile score, and My Miss Aurelia was brilliant running Frizette foes off their feet. While certainly not as august a performer, Never Retreat is becoming kind of a female version of Gio Ponti and was incredible capturing her first G1 in the First Lady.

Hope everyone did well Saturday.. More good racing Sunday including an $81k P5 carryover at Keeneland!

More or less a second running of yesterday’s First Lady with an added 110 yards. What has happend to this once important event exemplifies the paradox of the synthetic era that converted G1 standard that saw immortal winners like Princess Rooney, Bayakoa, Susan’s Girl and Azeri give way to the mundane likes of Mushka, Acoma, Asi Siempre and Panty Raid. Very intriguing MDN event here with Dendrite (20-1) and Rock Harder exiting 9/17 affair that is sending Pletcher/Repole’s Our Entourage to today’s Breeders’ Futurity and Motion/West Point’s Gold Megillah to Sunday’s Bourbon. Additionally, Punctual Jeff (4-1) and Super Saturday (6-1) ran behind Kitten’s Kid (2nd in Pilgrim last week) on 9/3, and Two Months Rent (7-2) has chased both State of Play (With Anticipation winner) and Optimizer (Breeders’ Futurity). BEL, SA C/O’s add frenzy to day as KEE opens

Friday, October 7th, 2011

Took a sound beating at Belmont Thursday as poor decisions and jump up winners quashed virtually every attempt. The day’s key price ideas — Roses for the Star, Eternal Ruler and Scootles — all ran decent races, but invariably fell short or were overhauled to finish 3rd, 3rd and 2nd respectively. P6 carried for another day to reach $103k, but opening card at Keeneland draws my primary attention. As if alluring scenarios at New York and Kentucky weren’t enough, Santa Anita carried Thursday, and that we can score some on the challenging Keeneland opening slate to go into the big holiday weekend on the uptick!

Tough set to start the P6 sequence. Day’s best race is made attractive by vulnerability of favored Humble and Hungry given questionable rating of the race he exits (G2 Hall of Fame). Super Saturday heightened by $60k C/O at Santa Anita

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

Big Super Saturday lineup of racing with NY, IN and CA the venues under the microscope. Weather for Belmont card an exasperating frustration, but we may muddle through OK with heaviest rain ending by morning. Turf will certainly be soft-yielding, anddoubt the non-stakes are contested on the inner or Widener. Despite scratches of Big Drama (Vos) and Sangaree (Kelso), there are more than enough stars and key matchups to keep the action compelling. At Hoosier, Shackleford and Caleb’s Posse are confronted by legit up and comers in Wilburn and Populist Politics in the Indiana Derby, while at Philly, Plum Pretty looks to take it to It’s Tricky in the rich Cotillion. The second day of the Santa Anita Autumn Meet delivers a $60k carryover, an added bonus on what looks like the best action of the day top to bottom highlighted by the 4 G1 events. At Laurel, the Jim McKay Maryland Million slate came up predictably contentious. Hope you’re ready for a great day, and weekend, of action! Bob Baffert and David Fawkes join Seth Merrow and I on Capital OTB TV-12’s “Loose on the Lead” 9-10a…

Stacelita was clear horse to be beat anyway, and she has handled off-going lawns just fine. Next three below her aren’t impossible of course, but are up against it if Chad Brown miss reprises Beverly D effort..

This event was interesting without the question of the turf course condition, as a couple in here were capable of challenging obvious Cape Blanco. You only need to go back to Mission Approved’s Manhattan stunner to appreciate the variable of a yielding or soft course..

Sangaree a SCR. As nice as Jackson Bend is going, hard to see how Uncle Mo doesn’t control this ala the Champagne win 51 weeks ago today. Jersey Town has big efforts in him as exemplified by the Cigar win, and Goldigger’s Boy is solid and constant though slower than what it will take here. Weird things happen in small fields, and I can’t fault those who cover everyone to some degree in their P4 plays..

Most Likely: #3 Uncle Mo 3-5 (Est. revised ML)
Next Best: #2 Jackson Bend 7-5 (Est. revised ML)

9th: 73rd Beldame Invt. (G1), F&M-3+, 9f (P3, DD)

Even a solid move forward from Royal Delta won’t be enough to win here without a misstep by Havre de Grace.

Exotics Use: #1 Life at Ten 8-1

10th: 93rd Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1), 3+, 10f (DD)

Lost some luster with setback scratch of Tizway, but still intriguing enough with emergent soph Stay Thirsty facing elders, for the first time. Variable of wet track situation adds further mystery as nearly everyone signed on has been adept on off tracks..
