In 1986 he had his career high 701 plate appearances, and only struck out 35 times all year. It was a shame that the Padres were so horrible that a lot of people outside of the NL West really don't know or remember how great he was. |

![]() Farewell, Mr Gwynn. As lifelong Astros fan, I admired his body of work. He knew pitchers better than these pitchers knew themselves. Gwynn understood analytics before term 'sabermetrics' was defined.
Tony Gwynn blended art and science of hitting masterfully. In today's environment, I would venture to say he would be shift buster.
