Independence by no means guarantees tolerance, they are completely separate concepts...just because one is "free" does not mean he/she is tolerant of the rights of others.
And pointing out hypocrisy, as in the case with 'I'm not a stand by your man' Hillary Clinton does not make one intolerant. Neither does not wanting to support you and subsidizing insurance policies.
