their choice really - No Chance picks an alternate for his number 1 and 2 so if the original choice is a scratch, the alternate takes the scratched horses place. With just one alternate, the number 2 choice becomes the number 1 choice and the alternate becomes the number 2 choice. Make sense? Probably not, but its not really a big deal.. you can pick 7 alternates if you wish
