What makes it worse is that you can't even embrace the small time people making it big because, besides Borel, these people are dreadful.

from kyderby.com:

Mine That Bird pulled the second-biggest upset in Derby history, eclipsed only by Donerail's famous 91-1 shocker in 1913.

Mine That Bird also became the first Canadian champion juvenile to wear the roses since Sunny's Halo in 1983. The winner of the Grey S. (Can-G3), Swynford S. and Silver Deputy S. on Woodbine's Polytrack last season, he rewarded his backers with payouts of $103.20, $54 and $25.80.

Pioneerof the Nile held second narrowly, paying $8.40 and $6.40, while third-place finisher Musket Man (Yonaguska) returned $12. The exacta was worth $2,074.80, the trifecta totaled $41,500.60, and with Papa Clem (Smart Strike) in fourth, the 8-16-2-7 superfecta was good for $557,006.38.

Completing the order of finish were Chocolate Candy (Candy Ride [Arg]), Summer Bird (Birdstone), Join in the Dance (Sky Mesa), Regal Ransom (Distorted Humor), West Side Bernie (Bernstein), General Quarters (Sky Mesa), Dunkirk (Unbridled's Song), Hold Me Back (Giant's Causeway), Advice (Chapel Royal), Desert Party (Street Cry [Ire]), Mr. Hot Stuff (Tiznow), Atomic Rain (Smart Strike), Nowhere to Hide (Vindication), 7-2 favorite Friesan Fire (A.P. Indy) and Flying Private (Fusaichi Pegasus).

friesan fire does things a bit differently...instead of finishing second like the last two years, porter/jones finish second to last.

ouch!

Not making excuses for FF, but it seemed that he was slammed hard on the break and then pinched. Never got going after that.

If it wasn't for Borel and being the Kentucky Derby he would have been 250-1. Seriously. On form he was 15 lengths off of possible.

It's a darn good thing horses don't care like we do over who wins because I would be disgraced to walk back to the barn after being beat by Mine That Bird. LOL

He ran well. It was a pretty good day for Birdstone, who never got the respect he deserved as a racehorse.
I have always hoped that he would become a good sire, and today certainly won't hurt.

I'm not much of a figure player, but I sure don't see anything that would say he was fast enough to do what he did. Can say all they want 'bout Canada, but he's been too slow.

I thought the trainer looked a bit shy, not arrogant at all.

Found an article from the courier-journal about him- it says he thought Mine That Bird's connections were "stretching it" to enter him in the Derby. Heh. One of the owners says in it, "We'll run better than people have predicted." Uh, yeah. I'll say.

The horse got a great trip (helped by a golden rail) and freaked in the mud!

"small time" people gives hope to us like Dee Tee that the little guys in the sport can win! I find this group MUCH more worthy that last year's in the slick black suits.

Sadly, I'm starting to see Sightseek's point- these owners are nothing like the DeeTee crew, who are not allegedly bribing legislators and don't have a quarter of a million to spend on horses.

Son of a b*tch. Well, at least I can still love Calvin.

(Darn you, Sightseek, and your excellent people instincts!)

Interesting.....but, I think she was talking thier appearance and what he said in the winner's circle. I guess they do have something in common! But, Calvin's ride on SWLY at Saratoga was nowhere near as good as his Derby victories....if fact, I think he didn't really gave her a good chance that day.
