You make a good point...I picked him as I thougt he'd be a shot. With everyone on the bandwagon, I may change my pick.

  • ridden as so much the best in Churchill allowance
  • stole the spotlight in the Cashcall stretch
  • trained by Todd Pletcher

We don't really know a damn thing about the horse yet, but he keeps dropping hints that he has serious talent. FOY will be an excellent chance to actually learn something about Monba.
The wagering value of "potential" horses like this is determined by the odds. We don't get good value on Monba in the FOY(what does he go off here 4-1?), but depending on how deep we want to spread a wager he could be difficult to toss. Say we loved Kentucky Bear, and wanted to key KB in different levels of a trifecta or superfecta... including Monba in some of the slots is probably wise.

I don't get him at all either ( which probably gets him in the winner's circle ). He beat a terrible field at Churchill with an absolutely perfect trip and horses that run supposedly well after races are over, as he did in the Hollywood Futurity, are almost universally sucker bets.

for some reason, horses who close in the stretch like he did, become the horse who will 'win when distances get longer'. we see it every year. a horse closes furiously, and everyone (well, not everyone) thinks that had he just had a bit more to run, he'd have won.....

he's in my road to the roses stable.

but then, i had no clue who to put in there, and pletcher tends to win races leading up to the derby.

He's in my stable too. It's not like there are that many nice ones to choose from regardless... LOL

No wonder Pletcher is out buying every 3yo he can get his hands on. He has nothing! He might as well keep Face the Cat here for the Florida Derby. At least we know he likes the track here.

Is there any reason in the world that a horse would run as badly as monba did today? Is it possible to bleed thru Lasix? Didn't look like an injury but cannot believe that he finished last. I'd love to hear from someone that may have some meaningful insight.

He's a very good trainer....who happens to have a dearth of good 3YOs. You would be kidding yourself if you didn't think every trainer in the game didn't have one eye on the rearview mirror looking for Todd at all times.

Though, most of the time he is looking at them in his rearview mirror. It's nice to see some others getting a chance to shine....but Todd will be a factor in big races this year and many years to come.

because he sucks? or was the slowest?

he got pinched the first turn, and never ran a lick after. he's not good enough-and against some in that field, that's a pretty bad indictment of his talent-or lack thereof.

I did see the bump in the 1st turn but didn't look that bad. I was just sitting in disbelief after the race as i was hoping monba and zhumor would run decent races. i started a thread on here about why all the hate on the 3yr old crop and after today i guess i kinda see what you guys are talking about. Man I hope like hell that the rest of the preps are better then this one.

i think the first couple of finishers will be ok...monba needs to head back west, fla doesn't seem to be his bag. z humor shouldn't have run back this quickly, unless it was against the likes of what war pass faced today. considering how far back court vision was early, i don't know that you could really toss him-depending on where he shows up next.

but i do think the FOY separated a good bit of the chaff out of the wheat today. everyone outside the top three needs to lower their expectations for next time...

Monba ran today like his sister, Gray Cache. I owned this filly at one time and she was not much of a runner or a looker.
With all the hype of Monba, I was becoming concerned I had sold a sister to a possible Derby horse. Not as worried after today!

LOL. Potential brush with brilliance, LOL. Oh well. Did the filly ever get bred? If the colt wins some stake, somewhere, anywhere, etc. -- she could be worth a few dollars. Then again, you said she wasn't anything to look at. Maybe not.

On the other side of the coin, Zito has such a ridiculously stacked hand. If the Derby was run tomorrow he might actually have 3 of the top 4 betting choices... and I'm not betting against him.
