The following has been copied from a CD press release about available wagers for Saturday:

"ALL-STAKES DERBY CITY 6 TO BE OFFERED SATURDAY – Churchill Downs will offer an all-stakes Derby City 6 Jackpot, Late Pick 5, Late Pick 4 and a special $3 All-Turf Pick 3 as part of its wagering menu Saturday. The all-stakes Derby City 6 will cover Races 7-12 starting at 3:52 p.m., which will encompass the Fasig-Tipton Fleur de Lis (Race 7), Tepin (Race 8), Kelly’s Landing (Race 9), Wise Dan (Race 10), Stephen Foster (Race 11) and American Derby (Race 12). All told, there will be four Pick 5s (Races 1-5, Races 4-8, Races 6-10 and Races 8-12) and three Pick 4s (Races 2-5, Races 5-8 and Races 9-12) on the card. Both the Pick 4 and Pick 5 are 50-cent minimum bets. The Derby City 6 Jackpot is a 20-cent minimum. The All-Turf Pick 3 will encompass the Tepin (Race 8), Wise Dan (Race 10) and American Derby (Race 12)."

I really wanted to take a shot at the Pick 6 that covered races 7-12, but was left in a quandry as to what to do with Thorpedo Anna in the Fleur de Lis. Last year the decision to single her would have been a no-brainer (I'm good at them), but I just didn't have enough confidence in her form this year to make her a single and the numbers just didn't fit our bankroll if I played against her in the pick 6, mostly since I have no idea how the Foster will turn out. So, here goes with my Plan B:

Race 8: $0.50 pick 5: 5,6 / 1,3,4 / 3,7 / 1,2,4,5,6 / 1,3,8 ($90)

FYI Blunny. Alternates can't be used in the ROI contest. You can change your picks up until the tracks first post time. Should any of your first three horses scratch it is just counted as a scratch.

After staying alive through 4 legs of my pick 5 play yesterday, I made the cardinal mistake of looking at the will pays before the final leg. That's as bad as counting your chips at the poker table and can incur the wrath of the racing gods. Sure enough, of my picks Reagan's Wit was a late scratch, Tiztastic didn't run a step and Freedom's Not Free lead to the 1/16th pole and then threw out an anchor. The winner. Minaret Station, was an overlaid 15-1 in the ML and went off at 5-2 or so, logical for the scratched down field. I actually played him in a Twin Spires pick 6 contest sequence but didn't have room on the ROI ticket. Perhaps in hindsight I went too deep in the Foster and should have taken a stronger stand, but I was in too much of a muddle in that race to leave any contender out. Still learning this game. All of the pick 5 will pays seemed to me to be extremely generous for a sequence that only included logical contenders.
