It's a bit tedious, but with a 3 horse box you have of course 6 different combinations. Using my example say I bet a 3,6,7 box, if I box them I only have to bet 3 times like this:

3-6 box ( is 3-6 and 6-3)
3-7 box ( is 3-7 and 7-3)
6-7 box ( is 6-7 and 7-6)

I think with a 4 horse bet you would have 12 different combinations, therefore requiring 6 boxed bets.
